I'm trying to figure out what to put on my .308 so I figured id ask what other people are running and how they like it.

I'm thinking I might go with the vortex. I've got a couple already and they seem like decent scopes. It would be nice if they had colour options though, I wouldn't mind one in tan to match the gun.

What ranges will you be shooting at? Max desired range?

Is it for plinking, hunting, or competition?

Mostly hunting and a bit of plinking. I would guess range would be up to 500 yards the odd time. I've got a couple decent long range rifles if the deer is on the opposite side of the quarter.

Are you a fan of FFP or SFP reticles? I'm beginning to become a FFP convert for a variety of reasons.

If you can live with a FFP reticle check out the Vortex PST 2.5-10x32 FFP in either MOA or Milrad (whatever you understand better). It'll get you out to a respectable range and removes math from the equation between magnification changes, the subtensions are the same at any magnification from 2.5 - 10 power. The Nightforce 2.5-10x32 is clearer glass with a SFP reticle (I love the MOAR). The -M's I've had have worn both scopes and I've had great results with either glass.

What you're also going to want to look at is a 20 MOA mount of some kind for shooting beyond 400 yards to give yourself the ability to stretch out to 600 or beyond :D. The rifle isn't a precision rifle, but fully capable of minute of deer to whatever range you're comfortable at. Of course the key being is to practise with your rifle and know the limitations.

Hope that helps.

I have a combo I'm not that happy with - vortex sparc with a swing-away x3 magnifier. On a nice .308 I want a higher magnification, and the magnifier / sparc combo doesn't let that much light through...

I might take the sparc / magnifier combo and put it on a .223 black rifle and pick up a 1-6 scope for the XCR-M.

I've also been on the hunt for an optic for a newly acquired XCR. I looked at the Vortex 1-4 PST as a few guys I know have it and love it, the online reviews seem to back them up. The warranty is also great, being lifetime. In the end I ended up buying a Minox ZA5 HD 1.2-6x24. The glass is very clear, I like the plex reticle and 6x high end magnification. The warranty is also lifetime, but only time will tell if it's required or honored.
