I previously did a range report for my own XCR-L .223, for which shooting worked-up reloads (worked up powder charge) we saw groups of 1MOA shot at 100 meters with a 3X scope. My brother just got an XCR-M in .308 with the heavy barrel, and so here is the result of our working up the load for it. First time shooting it as well actually, so, still breaking it in. Scope on it is the Vortex Viper 3-9X40. These groups you'll see below were shot at the Shooting Edge so only at 50m. We were going to sight-in & shoot 100m at Homestead but got out there and found that the public range has been closed - disappointed at first because it was a beautiful day, but then after being at the Edge realized we had a much better time than walking through garbage and having to call range cold with idiots still handling guns etc etc.
Load worked up is:
- new Winchester brass
- Hornady 168gr HP Match
- CCI 200 primer
- Varget powder
Charges worked up are, on the target sheet:
39.9gr - upper left
40.6gr - upper right
41.3gr - center
42 - lower left
42.7 - lower right (max charge as per Hornady manual)
Fliers called by the shooter are circled in yellow:
We really liked the 42gr load as the two outliers were called by the shooter and the other 3 seem to have went in the same hole. We were wishing we had loaded more test loads in order to test that one over again. We were shooting with front support on the rifle only, with the butt-stock supported only by the shoulder. Could really see your heartbeat moving the cross-hair around the bullseye at 50m...did our best to shoot the way you're supposed to, so, we're quite happy with the way this gun shoots. With front and rear support shooting on a bench, those groups should be a little tighter, and you should be able to maintain 1MOA at 100m...especially if that 42gr load is consistent.
Awesome 308 to shoot. Kicks as much or possibly less than my XCR-L 223. Amazingly easy to shoot standing and stay on target.
