Hey guys, recently picked up an XCR, 223 / 6.8 and i've been doing a lot of reading on optics and why some go with a simple red dot, red dot with magnification, small scope, regular scope etc.. I'm just really not to sure what i want, hoping for some more insight here, I will be blasting gophers, coyotes and the like, maybe try it for deer with the 6.8 although it wouldn't be my primary tool for the job. i want something that will allow me to zero in on soemthing 3-400 yards away and still hit it the first time. but due to the style of the tool (prefer that word now-a-days) i think something with a wider field of view or something that allowed '2 eyes open' is necessary. am i best off with a small, 1.5-5 30mm scope or what do you guys think? gotta be somewhat durble also. im not hard on things, but chances are it'll take a few bumps..

I've got a Leupold Mark 4 1.5-5x on mine and have been happy with the choice. The XCR is (IMHO) a bit heavy to put a red dot/EOTech on and run around with as a "carbine". I tried a NF 3.5-15x on it but the combination was brutally heavy/awkward and my XCR is not accurate enough to make use of that kind of optic anyway. After trying numerous factory loads I actually found the cheap MFS 62gr. SP shoots best - about 1.5" at 100m for 5 shots. I did try a few 75gr. BTHP hand loads that a friend was running in his gun and they seemed to shoot about MOA but I haven't found the time to further explore hand loading for this rifle as I'm happy with "minute of coyote" for my purposes at the moment. I'm not sure if 5x will be enough to get a good bead on a gopher at 3-400 yards, but I don't think you'll be hitting many targets that size at that range with an XCR anyway, unless your is a real gem.

+1 to the baron...... Including the NF scope which is currently on mine. (more cause it was a spare scope at the moment)
Heavy heavy heavy

maybe that falcon 1.5-5 would fit the bill, not too pricey yet im sure its plenty good enough for something that will get used once in awhile, any reason guys go with a fancy larue mount these days other then tacticoolness haha? if im happy with my optic i cant see why i'd wanna remove anything quick to utilize the BUIS...

Red dot plus magnifier could work. Gives you magnification when you want and can remove the extra weight when you don't need it.

I've got a Burris Ar-332 (3x 32mm) on mine.
It's got really clear glass and has bullet drop compensation for .223 out to 600 yards. It would be perfect for coyote hunting.
Wolverine has them on for $375 right now (good deal)
They also make Ar-532 (5x 32mm) bit more pricey.
I was in the same boat as you a few months ago. I went with the Ar-332 over a traditional style scope because I liked the compactness of the scope and the fact that you need no rings or mounts, it comes with every thing you need.
I found the sight hight to be pefect for the XCR-L with new style stock.
I've shot it out to 200 yards and I cant hit clays almost every shot with it from there. The BDC seems to work well.

Red Dot + Magnifier = expensive. Especially if your running Aim point or Eotech. I run a Vortex red dot for 3 gun shoots. All the targets engaged are 50 yards in. I have crappy eyes and i don't think i could even see a gopher very well at 100 yards in a red dot never mind 400.

I would go with a 30mm objective on a 1 piece AR style mount so the cheek weld is close (Burris PEPR mount is cost effective option). As long as the eye piece is not goofy big it should clear the backup sights that the XCR comes with. I have a Leupold 50mm 4-12 and the backup site touches the eye piece but you can push it down so it's just the spring tension holding it against the scope. Eye piece diameter is 1.6"

The 50mm scope is a bit big and heavy on that gun but i was new to the sport when i bought the stuff. Live and learn, and still learning.

Shooting starts at 3:00

The Burris on the Swiss Arms below is a close second, but the optics and features of the Vortex beat out the Burris by a reasonable margin.

The optic is an amazing do all optic. CQB at true 1x with a red dot, mid to long range with ease with a ballistic reticle suitable and very effective for .223 or .308 out to and past 500 yards. (Tested by yours truely)

You will not go wrong with this optic.

i got a vortex pst 1-4 on my xcr-l 7.62x39 with a leupold mount and it is a great scope! one huge plus for me is at 1x magnification you can adjust it so at 1x when going both eyes open you have a very clear, natural focus for both eyes, and at 4x its been solid; with much better eye relief then the millet dms 1-4 at both magnifications.

Where do I buy one ?

Sorry for the delayed response! My Leupold is mounted in either an ADM or a Vortex cantilever mount (I have one of each and can't remember which one is on the XCR but both are the same - solid). Eye relief is suitable for me and I'm very happy with the setup.

I do like my MK 4, but that Vortex Razor 1-6x looks like some nice kit.
