XCR or Custom AR (macabee) non restricted

Hi all, looking to buy my first 5.56 /223 18.5 non restricted.

Thoughts on out of the box XCR or a 18.5 AR build eventually off the new Macabee receivers? Im just a casual shooter , not competition. Like to hear some opinions. Budget $2500~ which means $1500~ in parts if i go the AR type route after the NR receiver.

How does the AR perform with a 18.5 barrel? Most of the restricted i see online are 16.

I had an XCR-L years ago and found it a great rifle but prefer the AR15.
I'm building an non restricted Maccabee SLR as soon as I get my hands on a receiver because an AR15 is simply much better with infinite number of accessories.
As for the 18.5 " barrel, the Colt AR15s were originally 20" barreled rifles and worked superbly. (The M16, M16A1, M16A2 and C7s have 20" barrel).
It's only with the rise of picatinny rails, modern optics and the 14" barrel M4 that shorter than 20" barrel have become common.

Full disclosure, I currently shoot a Binelli MR1 and will switch to WC180C as soon as I can get my hands on one and I'm looking to get a BCL102!

AR will be lighter and more accurate with more options for upgrades or simply changing out handguards or whatever but the newer XCR's seem to be pretty darn close to having all the bugs worked out. Either way you go should give you a quality rifle that's reliable and looks good.

One thing to consider which I don't like the thought of is that if the Lieberals get their way the AR and probably all these new options that look just like an AR will be the first ones on their list for prohib, the XCR may last a few more years. Hopefully Canada has had enough of that fool we are forced to call PM and he doesn't get voted back in so we can relax a little and enjoy our sport.
 
I think it depends on how soon you want your rifle. The SLR has not shipped a single unit, I would personally not plan a build until people have receivers in their hands and they are known to work. This industry is full of promises, and they don't always work out.

The XCR is a really great rifle, I had a NR one that I sold and sometimes regret it. The ergonomics are better than the AR, accuracy was so-so and it was a bit heavy. I would not buy a new one since the MSRP is crazy high. Try to find something used < $2500.

As has already been said above, be realistic on how much NR tax you're willing to pay (this is coming from someone who owns a very expensive NR AR alternative). They can be made restricted/prohibited at the stroke of a pen, and their value will plummet.

Good advice right up until you suggested buying BCL. You'd be better off spending your money on hookers and blow, you'd have a better chance of feeling your money was well spent than buying some aluminum paper weight that is out of spec and won't work.
 
Funny my 102 works perfectly once I rebuilt it with proper parts. The only thing you should buy from BCL is the stripped receiver sets.

I cant wait to junk all the parts and build a proper direct impingement 556. Piston system add nothing but weight. I dont have any other info either.
 
If you want something that works and is available me right now get an XCR. They are a touch heavy, but try a C8A3... not any lighter feeling to me.

Lot a of people say bad tho t's about the XCR, but as an owner for 5+ years and after thousands of rounds I thi knits worth the coin. If you can find a keymod light barrel used you're golden.

Early XCR's got a bit of a bad reputation and people haven't let that go. I think their newer stuff if pretty good but I'd still rather have my ACR.
 
Have an Robinson M .308, L .223 Wylde Compitition and 6.5 Grendel barrel , would not have anything else, have one AR which has had nothing but problems to fix
 
Great feedback. Sounds like i may need to buy both. Maybe the XCR first for bush then slowly wait for the 2nd batch of Maccabee receivers if they make one.

I dont plan to ever sell my guns so i just wanted to make sure i get quality pieces.
 
I think XCR's are great, and the only game in town for multi caliber quick change barrels. They can be accurate and are built like tanks ... designed as battle rifles.

If you're only looking for a caliber or two (and fits in the ar-15 envelope), it may make more sense to build off one of the new receivers. You'll have lots of parts options to build budget or high quality - and you'll have more control in the accuracy department.
