XCR or Mini 14

Before I get blasted let me explain. I would like a 6.8 as a hunting gun. I would like my boys to be able to shoot it and like the idea of being able to put adjustable stocks on. I got an SR22 for this reason and it is great. I also like the flavor of the day idea. I can set up my gun in minutes to shoot open sights or red dot or scope. I use both the dot and sights on my 22 and really like how customizable it is.
So my question is. Would there be a difference in accuracy in both these rifles while using a scope? I know some guns and loads are better than others but, I keep hearing the rugers are a bit inaccurate. Any truth to this? If not then it looks like it's more than half the price less for the Ruger. Thats a lot of ammo I can buy. Any one have any insight.

The new Ruger Mini 14's with the heavier tapered barrels are much more accurate than the old ones. Mine will shoot into 1.5" all day with my handloads. They are a nice little gun and I like the fact that you can get one in stainless steel and sythetic stock. If you can afford the XCR though, it is a modular design that will do everything the mini can ...
 
Save yourself the aggravation. Unless you expect all of your shots to be within, say, 75 yards, don't waste your time with the Ruger.

The XCR, on the other hand, is the first choice of John Farnam.

Not so. I have made shots on coyotes and beavers that were over 300 yards with my 580 series mini. Any time that you ask these kind of questions about the mini, you are going to get a lot of remarks from guys who had one of the old 180### series minis, etc. Those old mini's were often brutally inaccurate. The new ones, from my personal experience are a different gun when it comes to accuracy.

I have to agree 100%. I don't know why we have to keep answering the same question over and over. Please do a search. People who own the current Ruger's all report 1.5" accuracy at 100yds. I have achieved the same results. Of course this depends on ammunition used. How accurate is the XCR ? Please provide pictures of groups. And be honest. No slam on the XCR, just asking.
 
1 vote for the mini-14, never owned one, but i like the looks and feel of them, and have never heard anything bad about them for what they are
 
Mini 14

You can get a Mini 14 add a HarBar and shoot a little over an inch all day with factory ammo for under a $1000. Or you can wait and get an XCR shoot the same or better and pay $2200+. Mini is a great gun and more accurate now than it was, and they are really reliable. XCR is also a great gun but a lot more pricey in my opinion. Its up too you.
 
if you are looking to buy just a "hunting" rifle go with the Mini, if you are looking to buy "tactical"rifle you can go hunting with than get an XCR.
 
So I would assume you would get more attention with the XCR. Good or bad. I wonder if one would need copies of the law if packing it around.
 
Lets all be practical and honest....

The Mini is the best choice....

the 223 calibur is not traditionally a hunting round (yes in some areas you can hunt with it) it is more a varmet round. Hunting varmet means a second shot is just fine - if you do miss. The Mini is available and proven. The XCR is new and still has issues and tweaks coming... Really, who likes having that new computer part that you cant get a working driver for - same thing. The only thing that would sway me is the argument for optics.

If you are ok with iron sites - closer shooting then the mini IS the choice.... if you want to use a scope - farther shooting then possibly the XCR - as it has an integral rail. There is a MOD now for the mini that gives it a good rail also though.

Bottem line - Mini is proven and will NEVER fail you, you can mount optics on both & shoot the mini off hand very nicely with iron sites. The mini is lighter than the xcr if you plan to carry it ever. The mini is 1/2 the price - that IS important.....
 
The problem with the Mini is the recoil, BUT you can buy some pretty cheap aftermarket stuff to reduce it and it will shoot a lot more accurate, even the older ones.
 
I have to disagree on the recoil of a Mini-14 being a problem as it has no more recoil (felt) than any other .223, IMHO.

Recoil/gas system, call it what you want, the brass flies 20 feet and this recoil/ejection behaviour makes the rifle inaccurate. Plus, it has a lot more recoil than the .223 bolt action I have, definitely a lot more than an SKS or CZ-858.
