XCR , to buy or not to buy?

Had one for almost 2 years, I have to say.. No. Its lumpy, things fall off of it, its front end heavy (unbalanced), no fun to carry, heavy bolt makes for lots of movement, its not battle proven, its over priced. but you wont know this until you pick up/shoot and carry other rifles in the same class. AR's, TAR-21, or really any other semi.

With handloads I've had my XCR shoot a hair over MOA. It's not a tack driver for sure but as a calling gun it would work fine. When I was done with all the Hera on my SL8 it was a $3k gun and would easily shoot sub MOA with my handloads. I hated the shifting POA though and it didn't do me much good to be able to shoot a tiny group if it was three inches away from where my previous day zero was. Oh and the nose was heavier than my chubby barrelled XCR. My AR out shoots them both but I won't be taking it out calling in the foreseeable future. I'd like to try a Swiss but I'm mot sure its going to shoot a bunch better than the XCR and with the reclassification pending I'm not willing to stick my neck out that far. The N/R ACR would be fun to play with, haven't seen any tiny groups posted with one of them either though, need to get one in Carmel's hands I guess:). With the unbelievable support that Wolverine offers for the XCR I think every household should have one or two. Their support alone adds a pile of value to the platform and as long as they keep standing behind the XCR I won't be parting with mine.

Are you saying the SL8 was wandering? If so I find that very strange. Mine holds zero all day long no mater if it's first shot of the day or 10 fast mags and a hot barrel later. I have a couple handloads that are just a fraction over 1MOA and one load that is keeping 5 rounds inside an inch at 100yds. I think with a little more development it will do better as well since I've read a few people reporting .75 MOA.
My HK is around $4000 retail the way it's set up now though which is a lot to have tied up in a $2300 .223 rifle. Lots of extras make it the way I want it but the aftermarket parts are expensive for it. Non of them make it shoot better though so it was just ergonomic improvements.

There is the "battle proven" comment. I really love that comment and laughed at it quite a bit when I was doing my research on the XCR. Why people get hung up on that, I will never know. Personally, I don't buy rifles because of their effectiveness in battle. If that was my concern, I would fall back on my Garand, K98, Springfield, Mosin Sniper or Longbranch to reach out and touch something. All designs go through growing pains, and the older XCR models may have had issues, but those have been resolved. As I mentioned before, guys really need to hit the Gym.....or carry around an M1 Garand and then pick up the XCR. I would love to own an AR variant, but I will not buy a restricted rifle. I won't do it, and I do not feel I am missing out because of it. Pistols are the only firearms I own that require a Range/Club membership. I want to be able to shoot a rifle wherever and whenever I am allowed to discharge one. Tavor's are nice, but you better like a bullpup....and the price. I had the T97, and while a great little rifle, I was just not into the design (I have shouldered a Tavor too, same thing). I also agree with the OP on the Benelli.....butt ugly!!

OP, get the XCR, you will love it!

Still is by far my favorite rifle. I still get home home work somedays and just fondle her or an hour or two. You wont regret it.

Edit- and oh ya, I've has zero problems with mine, broke it in on gas setting 1 as it seems their machining is getting better at RA. I also bought the parts kit from wolverine just for convienience if anything ever does break.

That's 3 great tastes that taste great together...

Yea I did have wandering POA. I tried three different rail combinations and for the most part it was fine. The odd morning I'd go out when it was -30 and it would be shooting three inches off @100. Of course I would find this out after missing a couple of dogs and then go home and check my zero and voila way off. I did my due dilagance on the rest of the components and determined the action was warping in the cold. It was aggravating enough that I sent it packing.

haha yes AWOL! Great tastes indeed,

Yes it is true though the xcr isn't a tack driver by any means But yes with "good" ammo or hand loads (either of which I'd hope your using if your hunting) it will perform out to 300 on coyotes.

On another note, would I own an xcr if ar's were non-restricted? Probably not. I loved the c7 in the army and I would love to have an ar out in the bush but due to people with half a brain the xcr is my best option for my needs and wants. Plus bonus points for being completely a bada$s rifle haha

I have an OD green XCR-L with uppers in 223 and 6.8SPC are accurate for me loaded with my handloads I have no problems dropping game out to 300 yards.

10 round LAR 223 and 7.62-39 10 round (hold 11 6.8) pistol mags made these even more fun.

Anyone that tells you its a 2" - 3" MOA rifle has never worked up loads or mounted a scope with any magnification on the ones they are shooting.

Here's a pic of a few coyotes I shot with mine I'm heading up to a ranch plagued with coyotes/cougars next week one of the rifles I'm taking is my XCR-L in 6.8SPC I am looking at taking a few at 300 yards.

I now have one of the new folding RA FAST stocks on it as well my scope on the 6.8 upper is a Leupold VX111 4.5-14X40 LR Varmint reticle with my 95gr TTSX loads I can easily shoot 4" 300 yard groups.

I'm just under 6'3" and have no issues with length of pull.

Oh god, I wouldnt even be thinking about it if AR's were non restrticted, if that werent the case , like my original post stated (I changed it) That I was going to get a precision AR, but said and done, I'd be paying 2300 hundred for it , another hundred bucks and I can just get myself an XCR and have a lot more fun, will have a DDM4 as a range toy and figured I would put that precision AR off until I can make sense of buying one :D So XCR is it.

Niiiiice, beautiful winter coats on those puppies. And yeah, I'll decide how accurate it is after I scope one and shoot it myself. Great picture, that's making me jealous.

Only thing about my XCR-L that drives me nutz is I get to legally carry 10 round mags with one in the chamber = I have 11 rounds ready to go as fast as I can aim/shoot but I only ever get to take one shot.

One of the coyotes in the above picture quivered a tiny bit after I DRT'ed it so I shot it again the rest of the time everything just drops dead with one shot.

Need to catch one running out in the open sometime and open up on it that would be a hoot...

I like the cut of your jib, what make and height rings are those you got there? Also, its cool not to answer, but mind me asking where a bouts you were in that pic?

I was just north of Red Deer, Alberta visiting my in-laws had to do something to get out of the house.

Leupold 1" PRW low or medium rings can't remember for sure the scope is an older Vari X 11 4-12X40mm LR reticle.

I had a newer gen XCR and I loved it, I sold it to fund other projects but I will be buying another one soon. It ran perfect with every type of ammo I fed it. Don't believe all the junk people say about them as most haven't owned one. Loctite is a popular joke, but realistically even if you need to do the barrel bolt it isn't a huge deal. It has awesome ergos and is a sweet looking platform, the only downside I agree with is that it is a bit heavy.. but muscle up. It's a great rifle.

any idea if 6.5 grendel kit is in the works for it

They already do the 6.8 SPC I can't see them doing something so similar and proprietary like the Grendel. They do however say on their website that they have working prototypes in .300 Whisper and are looking into production of the Micro in that chambering.
