Hi,

What's the difference and/or advantage to using lighter or heavier main springs in this gun? I'm looking at building up my spare parts collection for my new (used) XD-40 and don't know which weight (eg:16lb., 18lb., 20lb., etc.), to use. Any thoughts?

Thanks nutz. :D

The stock spring is 19lbs. Try a 22lb spring, It makes a lot of difference in managing the muzzle flip and recoil when using 180gr bullets.

I have had my XD40 tactial since 2003 and have put approx 25000 rounds through it and it still works great and all the original parts still.

Does the 22lb. spring slow the action in any significant way? (second shot time?)Would it be ok for IPSC? I've heard that the 20lb. spring is the most popular. Do you agree? Thanks.

The 22lb spring is the most popular spring weight. The spring does not slow the action but rather absorbs the mass of the slide more effectively during the cycling action. The heavier spring also forces the mass of the slide forward faster effectivly causing the pistol to muzzle forward/down to almost the same point of where it started. This all happens so quickly that you would only notice your double tap shot placement in the same area... that is great for IPSC.

I have used the XD40 tactial in the Open, Standard and Production Divisions of IPSC.

I have not seen an ambidextrous slide release yet.

just a note on the spring issue...what pop is saying is true...althought i run a 22lb spring in mine. Ive had some issues with certain ammo. The lighter loads made the slide slow down and a few times the slide didnt have enough energy to #### back all the way. these issues arent apparent with high power loads.

I have run a 22# recoil spring (Wolfes) virtually since day one. I found that it dramatically reduced muzzle flip with my XD-40, particularly with my fave reload, which is a 180gr Montana Gold bullet over 5.8gr of WSF. I have had ZERO malfs with my pistol since new, and have put thousands of rounds through it. I did try a 24# spring, which didn't make the gun feel or shoot a lot different, but OH BOY was it hard to rack the slide  , so out it came.
I also installed an XD-Gear extended mag release....a big improvement for small hands, along with a stainless recoil guide rod.
