XD .40 springs

I am loading a XD .40 to 800 fps with a 165 gr CMJ, and want to get more slide speed. When I check a stock spring (if it is the same as a 1911) I get a measurement of about 15#. When a put in a 1911 13# spring it is lighter, however, the slide feels like it will open about an 1/8" before it gets tight. Has anyone had any experience with changing springs on a XD? With the slide opening slightly I do not want to fire as I do not want a detonation where the case is not fully supported.

stock spring on the XD40 tac is 18# (at least mine was). You can replace it with quality full size 1911 springs. 800 fps is a pretty soft load for .40 so you could probably run 16# spring without any issues. Remember to swap the 16#back to an 18# or slightly higher if running hotter loads to avoid feeding and ejection issues. WOLF springs are good.
 
Guys have been replacing their factory spring with a 20-22lb spring. I think that's too much, my XD40 cycles my handloads very nicely with the factory spring. I load to about 850 with 180gr SWC and Titegroup and get plenty of speed and punch.

You can only change so much when toying with springs and speed. I would think the people who make the gun thought of that and decided on a #17 spring. Yes, factory standard is #17 on 5" XDs.

However, you may want to try some of the variable power springs that Wolff sells. Maybe try a slightly heavier variable power spring. (Not sure if they make them for XDs... but check) That's money well spent. I buy #17.5 variable power springs for 1911s. Maybe try those see how they work.

... and don't forget to replace your striker spring to match the new recoil spring. Not a big deal, but I'd still do it.

If you want to improve your XD and maybe your accuracy, replace the guiderod with a polished stainless one. ;)

that is of course if you are shooting in Standard... non factory springs and guide rod are going to bump you into Open

hunhhh? non factory springs and guide rod will leave him in "standard",..shooting minor unless his bullet is 200gr+...
Why would he be in open...?

No but he could be talking about IDPA, CDPA or xDPA...

There's also alot of Club Level action style shooting...that has nothing to do with IPSC.

Could be .. but xDPA's use full loads.. not wimpy 132 PF loads ;) ;) ;)

I know.. as this is almost the exact same load as I use in my XD 40.. I can't get below 135 as the spring is to heavy, and won't cycle the factory spring.. 135 is as low as I can go without cheating ;)

I can't speak for the splinter groups of defensive pistol shooting, but in IDPA, the XD40 shoots in Enhanced Service Pistol (ESP) Division and the minimum PF in ESP is 125,000 (IDPA doesn't divide the product of bullet weight and MV by 1000). And it's perfectly OK to swap out springs. :cool:

125,000 whats "defensive" about a powder puff load like that..

I guess even IDPA has it's gamers ;) ;) ;)

(said in jest.. Just joking about the whole IDPA offsoot from IPSC over the gaming vs defensive thing.. )

I guess I stand corrected..
