I am looking to buy a duty pistol and I need some help I like both the xd and the m&p and iv read a few different articles on them one of witch put them against each other but I’m still undecided from what I can tell the 40 s&w is a more controllable round and better for accuracy witch is want I want but on the other hand every article iv read says the xd in 45 has good grouping I was looking for some input from people that have shot both guns or that have either gun I hope to buy one this week so any input would be appreciated thank you

lol ya i could use a little more reason cost of ammo is not an issue i just want an all around good shooting duty pistol and if there are any other guns in this catagory let me no but no glock anything but glock i really dont like the feel

between the two I'd go with M&P...XD tactical is too big for liking (about the size of a Glock 35) plus S&W looks better IMO...

I would throw a Steyr to the mix (see photo), it's pretty compact (for a restricted gun) has superb egros and for a polymer gun a great trigger with a fast reset. Looks sweet too. :)

M&P Cons:

- mag disconnect (I've heard stories that it can be ordered without the mag disconnect, and that no mag disconnect is not an option. -not sure what to believe, and have not confirmed either way. If someone can shed definitive info on this it would be appreciated)
- Magazine bases prone to breaking (I've only heard of this recently, not sure if it is an out and out issue with all)
- Question of parts and service availability due to new(er) pistol release
- Question of finish wear? time will tell

Pros:

- Interchangeable / modular grip back strap
- Price (comperable to XD)
- Stainless slide
- mag release is interchangeable left or right

XD Cons:

- Service and support. You break it, and it has to go back to Springfield.
Springfield will not release parts.
- Finish (slide finish on older models sucks, I believe Springfield has improved it slightly, but it is still prone to wear)
- Only the 5" 'tactical' model available in Canada (their 4" service model is prohib.)
- Grip safety (I don't find it an issue, but some do)

XD Pros:
- Rugged, proven design (has previous history as HS2000)
- Price (comperable to M&P)
- Stainless steel magazines
- Grip 'feel' and angle -reminiscent of Browning HP
- True ambi-mag release
- Somewhat established (still growing) aftermarket (won't take long for M&P to catch up)

I've marked pros / cons of each in order of importance to me, ymmv as always.

Overall I really like both. Mag disconnects and Springfield's refusal to release parts both piss me off royally.

We currently have M&P's WITHOUT the mag disconnect... I treally is hit or miss as to what arrives.

Springfield's refusal to service pisses me off as well.

beltfed, that's a great comparison!
Very useful, thanks!

Now for my vote, based entirely on specs and not actual experience with either firearm: M&P

personally, I prefer .45 to .40 for controllability, I find the snap slows me down more then the roll of the .45. I've got a probably around 3000+ rounds through my 9mm XD and no breakage yet, the .45 only has a couple of hundred through it, shoots smoother then a 1911. The MP is nice though, I'd get mine in 9.

Thats where I stand. The 45 push/roll is better for controllability than the snappy 40 (IMHO). The XD backstrap safety does bug me but that seems to be a personal preference.

thanx alot this will help me with my choice i am on my way to lever tomorow and i think they have bolth so i will feel them both out and see how it gose any more input between now ant 10 am is appretiated

XD has a good feel...proven design...grip safety...ambi mag release.

I wonder what the parts replacement possibilities are for both. From what I have heard so far, you would have to send Springfield your gun to be fixed should something break. But the other plus side is that HS2000 parts would fit in it just the same.
