xd v.s. m&p

Thats where I stand. The 45 push/roll is better for controllability than the snappy 40 (IMHO). The XD backstrap safety does bug me but that seems to be a personal preference.

Huh, I never even notice it's there. My XD 9 would probably be my carry gun if I ever go south, at least untill I can pile up shekels to by a p7.

There shouldn't be much of a price difference between an XD and a M&P, so it will come down to personal preference.
The "feel" of the gun in your hand is VERY important. Both guns have very good "feel" in the hand, particularly if your hands are small or medium-sized. The M&P's 'adjustable' backstraps will help a lot if you've got medium-to-large hands.
I suspect that the XD will be slightly more accurate than the M&P. Both are service pistols, but I would give the nod to the XD for accuracy. I've owned both an XD9 and an XD40, and the only problem I had with either was the tip of the ejector breaking off in my XD40. The gun never malfunctioned with this condition, but getting a replacement part was a pain. (Kudos to Mr. Wolverine for intervening and getting the part for me :)).
The M&P's seem to have an issue with their plastic box-based mags breaking, but the XD hard-plastic bases will break too if you continually drop them on the ground.
Do NOT judge the guns by 'snapping' the triggers in the gunshop. The only true test of a trigger is on the range firing the gun. The M&P's trigger will feel AWFUL dry-firing in the store, but it's actually not too bad at all on the range, and you will get used to it very quickly. The XD trigger is nicer and feels better (to me) than a Glock's with just a tad more reset, which is inconsequential if you're not shooting the XD in competition.
To sum up, you won't go wrong with either pistol. ;)

We have had to canibalize a number of guns to keep our customer's toys running... This part of the "lifetime" warranty sucks!

I just caught this, has this been an issue for anyone who has an XD? This seems to be a rather large pain in the arse.

Yes. I have an XD-9 with an extractor that is torn in half. (entirely my fault, and a lengthy story). I need to send it back through R.Nichols to Springfield. Considering this is going to cost me big, I'm now at a point where I'm deciding on whether it goes in to get pimped up at the same time, or do I turn it into parts.

Question: What would you rather do?

Get raped by a 1200lb bear with aids, or deal with R.Nichols?

From what I can tell they are the most useless people to deal with if you're not a police dept, the military, or a big security company.

I love my XD40. Would recomend to friends without hesitation. I do like the feel of the M&P too, and as soon as I've got some coin saved up, I will probably buy an M&P too. Comes down to personal preference. From my experiences, both are good guns, and you should be happy with either.

Let me know how you feel about the XD and Springfield after it breaks

couple thousand rounds through my xd 9 and nothings broken yet, knock on wood. True about springfield though. You can send it back to them in the states yourself and skip the canadian idiot, but it's more paperwork....:(

I have an XD9 with about 10K rounds through it...only a single problem ever. The front rail assembly developed a hairline crack in it between the rails (where the guide rod contacts). This never affected functioning of the pistol in any way. I managed to get a replacement part though "The shooting edge" in Calgary, but it took quite a while. I was on the phone to Springfield and to FN sports out east many times.

The XD is a very rugged, simple, accurate, and comfortable pistol. I just wish I could get my hands on a 4" service model.

I have put around 1000 rounds through my xd9 and it has worked flawlessly since the day I got it. Fiocchi, Remington, Winchester, handloads, all with no problems. With a hogue grip it feels very comfortable in my hand. I have been a little concerned about the lack of available parts and having to ship it to the U.S. for warranty work, but if it never fails then its not really an issue. I haven't found another pistol out there with the features for the money.

- Service and support. You break it, and it has to go back to Springfield.
Springfield will not release parts.

I like my XD's and have not had one problem with them. I like the look of the M&P as well, and I am sure they would be a great gun - its whatever feels better in your hand.

Not to defend Springfields support in Canada but to clarify that it is not Springfield itself that is the major problem. If you lived in the US you would likely say they have great support and service. Our inability to ship our guns to the US is a problem - not Springfields fault. But the major problem I have had is you end up having to go through one place in canada to get service from Springfield which is located in Quebec and they are horrible to deal with - This is springfields fault they should pick a new importer. Everytime I have spoken to Springfield directly they have been great and I have been able to get parts from them - sent to my uncle in the US. So, my experience has left me with a good impression of Springfield but a poor impression of the Canadian Importer.

I've been beating on my XD9 since I got it and no problems other than an occasional failure to lock the slide back on the last round. Not sure what thats all about, but the gun shoots awesome.

The only time that has happened to me, my thumb was creeping up and resting on the slide-release. If you're careful with your thumb the problem will most likely go away.

Actually it is all Springfield.
It isn't the Canadain importer's fault Springfield won't release replacement parts for guns that are bound to fail (as all mechanical devices do).

The finish on my XD40 sucks and the service if I ever need it looks to be a PITA but the gun just feels, points, and shoots so good that I can't not like it

I just said what my experience was and it was good and I got replacement parts from them. The parts you are talking about may be different, I had problems with the followers on a couple of magazines and they sent me new magazines over the phone without me sending them anything back so I thought that was excellent service, so I have had not one issue with Springfield only the Canadian Importer who would not accept the magazines from Springfield - which is why I had to send them to my Uncle in the US.
