I'm purchasing my first semi-automatic handgun and I'm leaning toward Springfeild but I'm debating between the XD40 vs XD9mm, any opinions as far as accuracy?

9mm is cheaper

40S&W kick a little bit more but not enought for me to justify its price vs 9mm ammo.

As for shooting precision I think the shooter will do more than caliber choice

Accuracy is the same between the two. Side by side they are very nearly identical. The 9mm slide is slightly thinner, and overall the 9mm is a little less nose heavy.
The biggest difference (obviously) is the ammo. 9mm is a little cheaper to shoot if you are shooting factory ammunition, but the cost difference is largely negated if you handload.

I dont know. They are similar guns an most respects, so it's down to your preference of caliber.
I like both, but own a 40.
BTW, whoever said that 40 kicks more then a 9, there is no noticable difference with the xd. At least in my opinion.

Both shoot well. Ammo is the deciding factor. If you shoot factory, go 9mm.

If you reload and only use plated/jacketed bullets, still the 9mm although the 40 is only a few bucks more per thousand.

Depending on where you live, brass from one or the other will be essentially free. Look for clubs that host RCMP practise/training.

If you are willing to cast, the 40. Water quenched ww through mine and it never seems to lead. Lee SWC profile with alox lube. Dead easy to make and the lubing is superb for the application.

No such luck with the 9mm in a variety of pistols.

I own a 40, cast my own bullets and love the XD.

i say the same as the rest 9mm is cheaper. but you can get a conversion barrel for the .40 and shoot 9mm with it so you could have both. but from what i hear you may have to change mags and the extractor to make it 100% reliable in 9mm but I'm sure someone who has done this could clarify.

9mm is only about $20 cheaper than .40 for 1000 rounds. Not much of a price difference. Do you plan on doing any competitive shooting? If so, I'd recommend .40, factory ammo will easily score major points in IPSC.

If you want to carry in the US, unneutered 9mm mags may hold more rounds than a .40 or .45 caliber.

What do you want to use your pistol for?

Thanks jjackman. That gives me another option also. I though .40 would be more than .45 for some reason. I like shooting .45 but was going for a 9mm for the cost. .40 seems to be right between these two.

When I buy small volumes (1-2 boxes) I can usually find 9mm for $12-14, .40 for $14-15, and .45 for $15-16 a box.

Even if you shoot 2000 rounds per year, the difference is only $60. If you reload, it's almost nothing once you have brass. Now if you shoot 10,000 rounds per year it's going to cost you, but if you've got that much ammo and time, you likely have the cash anyway.

All I'm trying to say is, if you like a particular caliber or gun, don't let the cost of the ammo be the deciding factor. Accuracy beyond 30 yards with a hand gun takes a lot of skill and the lack of accuracy at that range will be more you than the caliber. We're not talking rifles.

Buy a 9mm if you want a high veolcity small bullet that's well suited to penitrate something like a helmet.
Buy a .40 if you want more power (bullet mass X velocity) without a lot of extra recoil and without sacrificing magazine capacity in smaller guns.
Buy a .45 if you want lots of power, recoil is not an issue (weak wrists don't let these semi autos cycle well) and you don't mind the weight.

Either way, you can't loose. I went through the same dillema when I bought my first pistol, also the XD. I went with the 40 cause it has a bit more oomph, not that its a factor when shooting paper. The amount I shoot, the little bit more I pay for the 40 is not a problem.
