XLR chassis, Pierce action w/top rail, broughton barrels 20" 1:8 twist 223 parts???

I was talking with Sean long ago about a 223 build before he disappeared and was going to have it done up in an XLR chassis, Pierce action w/top rail, broughton barrel(1:8), not sure of trigger(suggestions welcomed) and was wondering if you fine folks here would have sources for such parts. My friend here locally would put it all together I just need to get the parts ordered. Thank you in advance,

Mystic should chime in any second to peddle you a Pierce action (and a Sightron).
Try Gary Eakin at Bighorn for your barrel and trigger. Awesome guy to deal with!

Otok Sean built me my rifle off a a Pierce action. It's a great action. However if you plan on hunting with yours, which Im sure you plan too, I'd shy away from the Pierce. In the extreme cold (and I mean yours and mine kinda cold) the bolt is a tad sticky. I've tried running it completely dry, graphite , all different kinds of lube, you name it. You really have to run the bolt straight and hard. Took some getting used too, but it's not a problem anymore. I'd lean towards a Stiller or a trued Rem 700 if your going to hunt with it, they are much more forgiving than the Pierce in this case and you won't be giving up anything in terms of accuracy. If it isn't going to see a lot of hard use then get the Pierce.

Thanks for the info guys I shall check out mystic and bighorn Gary. jugi16 I liked the idea of the pierce action as Sean had mentioned a model with the rail built into the receiver. I will definitely use it for hunting but would like to target shoot with it as well. Hmmmm decisions. HAHA. Cheers fellow CGNer's,

When we set up to build a custom rifle for a client, ALL their needs are addressed.

The Pierce can be set up anyway and for any situation the customer request. It rarely stays the way it comes out of the box so....

If you have an action that was not set up to your end use - #1 did you have that discussion with whomever built your rifle or #2 were you expecting or accepting the lure of increased accuracy with the risk of lowered function?

Speaking only for myself, when customers know and are clear on their end uses, I have never had anyone complain later their project didn't do what it was requested to do.

Remember CUSTOM means exactly that....

YMMV.

My Pierce action binded when running it. In speaking with Pierce as well as Terry from Black Art, they both suggested it required the bolt to be lapped to fit a little better. Whether this included in a build through Black Art or not I don't know. What I do know is that the Stillers I've used, my Defiance, the Bats, and the Barnards didn't require that. I personally will never build on a Pierce again. terry is doing some really nice work, but he can also get actions other than Pierce.

Gary at Bighorn can get great pricing on Stiller and Defiance. If you want, I can get you set up with a Canadian made Spartan Precision action. He is doing a run of them right now. Decent pricing and very slick. I have a long action coming for me and a short action that he has donated for the Alberta Poker Rally.

Lots of options out there.

I wasn't lured into anything there Jerry, and I wasn't complaining.

I got a xlr carbon chassis directly from the company. They charge 90$ I think for shipping to Canada. . It's an awesome setup.

Ok some good info and opinions here. I know for sure I'm going to build a 223 with 1:8 twist 20" short barrel and wanted something like the XLR as it folded and was light weight ... decisions decisions now to figure out. Got a great PM from Jerry with info and opinion which I now got to think about and decide on what action, chassis, trigger group to run in this build. Thanks for all your replies, opinions, advice. Cheers fellow CGNers,

I am doing a similar build but focusing on weight reduction. I recently acquired a Pierce Ti Action and the XLR chassis is on my short list along with a Manners carbon folding stock, big price jump for the manners though but it sure is nice. I have handled the XLR chassis at SHOT and I really like the grip feel.

I have emailed back and forth a few times with Kyle at XLR and he is set up to do Pierce inletting (slightly different than the Rem with a near straight bolt lever and some other minor differences)

For folding the XLR you have to add the folder hinge tube. Unless there is a newer version, the one at XLR does not lock when folded and is not very stiff when closed and flexes down a bit with the weight of the rifle, that is kind of a put-off. But you can't argue with the price. I "built" the Manners stock that I wanted on their website and it would run me about $1600 or so with my ideal features.

I am thinking of going full custom stock with manners providing the shell, go with a different bottom metal. Christensen Arms is soon coming out with a super lightweight bottom metal (AER) that uses carbon fiber magazines. That is going with my theme.

ceriksson I like the sounds of what you are attempting to do. I like the idea of lightweight and a folder stock. I'm curious if anyone knows if the ATRS Infidel short action would fit in a XLR stock and could run 223???

You should look at the MDT HS3 with the folder. Just got my hands on one and I really liked it. Faily light as well with the Skelestock. Not as ligth as the carbon fiber jobs, but pretty light.

From what I understand, the Infidel is a standard R700 inlet with a thicker recoil lug. The HS3 has a standard recoil lug inlet.

You should definately check out Spartan Precision. Great work.
