Hey guys,

After buying my "retro" AR-15 and shooting the heck out of it, Ive been thinking of building something along the lines of an XM177 or a GAU. Specifically a carbine with no forward assist, A1 style sights, early collapsable stock and the large muzzle brake/comp.

Are these parts pretty much unobtainable up here? If so, are ANY of the aformentioned parts importable?

Something along the lines of this

From what I've heard, the stocks do show up on the EE, the original muzzle device is listed as a sound suppressor but there are replicas in the US that don't have the internal baffles. Other than that it's an SP1 with a short skinny barrel. If you Google something very specific (ie: XM177E1), you'll find there are some very detailed sites regarding these guns

I believe the "sound suppressor" thing is only a US ruling but because of it you can't get them out and no one makes them. As mentioned, there are legal replicas available.

The XM177 was always my first love.

Building an XM177E2 myself. Bushmaster makes an exact visual copy of the moderator but won't ship up here.

I have a used Colt slick side upper with sites and port door. PM me.

A Colt SP1 Carbine would be a good starting point for you. They came with the aluminun buttstock and skinny 1/12 16" barrel. Finding an 11.5 barrel with the proper profile (.625" FSB) is going to be the most difficult part. I've been wanting one for ages to build a 733 clone.

Parts do pop up from time to time, I've picked up a Colt aluminum buttstock off the EE. Flatside uppers show up as well but are mostly large hole uppers from Colt SP1's. You use to be able to pick this stuff up for pretty cheap because guys wanted to modernize their rifles but parts don't seem to come up as often and the prices seem to have risen somewhat. I'm sure someone like Dlask would be able to whip you up a reasonable facsimile of the flash suppressor.

It took me about 2 years to find all the parts to build mine, but mine has a real 10" XM177 barrel. Which there is only a handful of them still left. I know of five in the US. You have to remember that there was only 2500 XM177 built.

I had a chance to shoot a converted SP1 look alike in the mid '80's, it was fitted with an Armson OEG - pretty much state of the art at the time. Very light and easy shooting, quicker than anything I had used despite not really being familiar with the OEG. The guy who owned it said the trick was to just pull the trigger as soon as the dot was on - he was right, no focussing, and no real "aiming" as I was used to doing. We were still trying to use the FN for CQB back then, that's when I realized we weren't even on the curve, never mind behind it.

Essentially I want to build a "clone", real parts arent needed. Im just looking for something close enough. I am in the states quite regularly, would the compensator (read Bushmaster copy - not the suppressor) be legal to purchase and bring back? Is it a controlled good?

Everything else I can source here alright, just that comp!

Have any pictures of your build?

So it seems as though Colt SP1/Sp1 carbine lowers are difficult to locate up here. What is another decent starting point in a lower? Completed or stripped. And in regards to the 10inch bbl vs the 11.5inch (2 different models of carbine) - is there a major difference in accuracy? Where can I purchase a 10 inch bbl or a lower aside from the EE and Questar?

Essentially I would like to build a Colt model 610 - photo from retroblackrifle.com. I have a stripped Colt slabside upper already. Bolt/charging handle are easy to locate.

Im not too picky on the lower to be honest. An SP1 lower would be good enough as my upper is a slabside Colt with the large screw hole (I do have the adapter however). No mag fence or a regular full mag fenced lower would be fine (which doesnt necessarily have to be Colt).

In regards to bbls where can I source a 10inch bbl?
