I am considering buying a remington xr100 in either .204 Ruger or .22-250. I was wondering if anyone has experience with this rifle and can shed any light on what I can expect. It seems like a nice combination of features for a reasonable price. Would a M700 VSF or VSSF II be a better choice. I am more concerned about accuracy than speed.

I've looked at the rig and its a very nice one. Dusty61 has one and has posted some results. Single shot action nice and stiff, coupled with a nice stock. For bench purposes it could be flater but as a package unit it gets my thumbs up.

One of the other interesting rifles is the Savage single shot with left port and right bolt.... single shot, heavy barrel....looks like a winner from a between factory and custom class....

That savage looks quite nice also, I like the idea of a single shot right now, and I'll look at it also. What do you think of .22-250 vs .204 I've got dies for the 250 but i'm kind of intrigued by the 20 cal

.22 cals offer many bullet selections. The .20 is still a bit limited but many are surfacing..

The .20 cal is a good one but not really for long range in my mind - especially in the 1-12 twist. You can go as heavy as a 40gr Berger BT varmint B.C. .239 - not too much long range potential.

In 22-250 it looks like it is a 1-12 twist. Not exactly a long range twist and you are limited to 62/64gr bulets Berger (BC .273 and .281) You might be able to shoot a 70bt (BC .317) due to the higher velocity but it will be a stretch. They recommend a 1-10 twist. Keep in mind Sierra may have some nice options.

The .223 seems like the real performer with a 1-9 twist for long range. It will out perform the other two at longer yardages. In Berger you can shoot the 75gr vld bc .448

Also you can get quality brass in .223 by Lapua. The .204 is more limited in brass availability (nosler) and the 22-250 is better (norma/nosler brass)

Keep us posted.

From the little bit I have read about the 204 Ruger, If you have access to good match grade bullets it makes a big difference. Berger bullets are supposed to be very good in the 204's. There was one other bullet that I read about but I will have to try and find which one it was.

Here is a good link to a article on the hot new 20 cals. http://www.6mmbr.com/20Caliber.html Enjoy............

I reed 2 articles in Shooting Times last year for the 204 ruger. One was for a CZ america hunting rifle that shot .250 to .450 groups which is phenomenal for this type of rifle. With the xr100 rangemaster groups where a lot bigger hovering from .750 to .900 inches. I would check choice of rifle.

Hey guys, I know I revive an old thread but I'm looking for more info on this rifle. I've made a search but I found nothing else. Any range report for it? How does it perform?

The .223 seems like the real performer with a 1-9 twist for long range.

From remington specifications it's says 1-12 twist. Do they make an error or the rate of twist is realy 12".

Thanks

Mat

If your looking for a .223 with a faster twist then take a look at the Remington 700 P or LTR or at a Savage Varmint or LRPV. All are HB rifles and quite accurate out of the box.
I have an XR-100 in 22-250 that shoots better than I do but I am rebarreling it to 6BR later this month.

I love the XR-100 platform, but 1:12 it a slow twist rate for 204 and from experience using 1:12 twists, you pretty much need to stick with the 32 grain bullets. They're fast and they do specTACular things with gophers, but they get pushed around in the wind at distanced more than 300 yrds.

I now a few guys that have various factory 204's, (Ruger #1, R700's and XR100's) all have 1:12 twists and all have given up trying to get tight groups with 40's. I have not tried the bergers yet.

If it a case of 204 or 22-250 exclusively, for an all-round cartridge go 22-250. If you want a superb varmint cartridge, go 204.

223 might be an excellent alternative but above all, consider that the XR makes a great platform to customize later. I have one in 6BR and one in 6-6.5X47 Lapua (under construction).

I've XR-100's in both 22-250 and 204. Both are very accurate. As noted before, neither are really 'long range' packages as the 204's 1 in 12 can stabilize only up to the Hornady 40 grainer with it's BC of .275, and the 22-250 tops out around 60 grains - again around the .275 mark. The 204 shares a slightly flatter trajectory, and you can squeeze off about twice as many rounds before the barrel gets equally warm (compared to the 22-250).

The trigger's not 'all that' it's made out to be by Remington. It's better than most factory triggers, but there is still noticable creep. Interestingly, the trigger in my 204 adjusts to a *much* lighter pull than the 22-250's trigger was capable of. Go figure.

I've heard the same, however, I do know that my xr-100 LOVES the 39gr Sierra BK's and 40 VMAX's. It doesn't do nearly as well with the 32 grainers

This is an old thread, so I figure I'll update it a bit.
Milo bought the 22-250 version just over a year ago. He put a Leupold 6.5-20x on it and adjusted the trigger right down to the 1.5 pounds. It's a very pleasant rifle to shoot. I wanted one.

Well about 2 months ago, the XR-100 Rangemaster I ordered in .204 arrived. Fortunately I ordered before the 2007 price hike kicked in.

The .204. Low recoil, flatter trajectory and accuracy was said to be very good.

I haven't put a scope on my yet, since I have a number of rifles to buy scopes for at the moment. I'll be putting a 6.5-20x 50mm Zeiss Conquest on it. I'm hoping this rifle shoots.

It'll be a while before I get to shoot this rifle. I expect to be shooting it in the spring. This summer seems to be out.
