Probably a ridiculous question but what does one do when the tritium reaches its half life? Is it possible to remove the entire sight and replace it or can the tritium vial be replaced?

Depends how it's attached to the barrel, but they can be bought new and swapped if you're old one can be removed.

It's an 870 so it'll be epoxied in place. I haven't got it yet. I was weighing my opinions.

The other option is to solder a front sight ramp onto the barrel and then use one of Remington's XS Tritium front sights.
Those can be replaced pretty easily ....
