Alright, I'm bitten buy the custom stock bug. I keep seeing these photos of older custom rifles and they have the most beautiful stock shape I've ever seen...to me anyway. But I don't know the proper name for it. I was thinking of try to fit a new stock myself to a gun and thought why not start with exactly what I want the first time out. The closest I've found is at Richards Micro Fit, Old Classic #102, with shadowline cheek piece, straight comb and swept grip. That's the best description I can find for what I see on these older custom M70's in magazines, I think it's the straight comb and swept grip that makes my knees weak. Richards has this style in laminate, which I thought might be fun to try, but the reviews I read here about their service isn't so good. Where in Canada can a guy find something like that? And it that description I gave about right? Or could I be more specific about what I'm looking for. I looked at Great American Stock Company but didn't see anything that was quite right. Found Cole Guns as well, but looks like mostly shotguns, would my above description be enough for them to get me something close? Thanks

Does this look like the stock of your dreams?:). I would describe it as a Classic form with European-style cheekpiece and an open grip.

I got it as a semi-inlet from a fellow by the name of Don Robinson at the Kamloops Gun Show in 2006. If I remember correctly, he was from Kelowna, BC. I don't have any contact information.

I bought two identical stocks from him that day. The quality of workmanship was better than any I had ever seen from Boyds or Richards Microfit.

You can get the Robinson patterns from Robert Wilson in Sask. who obtained Don's machinery and patterns a few years back. I think that one (M98's) is called the English High comb classic . Believe there is also one similar with a lower comb intended for open sight use. I got a high comb from Roberts a few years back in a medium grade of English walnut for an FN mauser that is currently a 257 AIRbts. It's been a good stock.

You can order directly from Richards if you want to. No export permits required. Information about it is on their International Orders page. Their prices(with a 30 day return policy) look pretty reasonable too. Mind you, this guy says he owns Richards Custom Stocks now. Considerably more money. I don't think it's the same Richards though. Add the W's.

You may want to rummage around the 'net some to see what Claro, English, Black and Bastogne walnut looks like. A search for 'rifle stock woods' will turn up lots of sites. The Great American Stock Company's 'How stock wood is graded' page is good though.

Dan: the phone number I have at hand is 306-656-2159. Think he's in Harris. He runs small ads in Access to Firearms paper.
