yellow jacket ammo.

They never came packaged in cellophane.
Probably a box full of rocks

CIL ammo just came in the box no wrapping.

Huh... Looked very much like factory celophane type of wrapping. *shrug* Before my time, really. Didn't start shooting until the late 70s, and I think I only ever saw one or two 50round boxes tucked away in the forgotten corners of a few cupboards.

I took the pic because just before the show, my dad had mentioned it was all he used to buy in the 50s (as a part of a long rambling conversation about other stuff). To be honest, he could be full of sh!t about that too.

This shortage of .22 ammo is just crazy. The guys in the states have been hoarding like hell, but there's another reason too. In recent years a lot more handguns have come out chambered for the .22 cal, as well as a lot of small black rifles. ( also, look at how many people have a Ruger 10/22 on hand these days ) So that means a lot more ammo is being used as well. I would like to see a Canadian outfit start manufacture of .22 cal ammo. Wouldn't that be nice eh? Another thing I'd really like to see happen, is some of our suppliers start bringing in ammo from the European Union. Lots of those countries make very high quality ammo, even Olympic grade, both standard and high velocity. Wouldn't it be nice to be not so dependent on our neighbor to the south?

Check out Hirsch Precision, he is a site sponsor. He always has stock of Lapua or SK rimfire ammo. It's varying degrees of expensive, but if you compare it to the ever rising cost of 500 rounds of bulk ammo, it's not bad considering the quality. Also if you look at the cost of CCI Green Tag and compare it to true match ammo from Lapua, you'll wonder why you ever bought Green Tag, or Federal Match. To have ammo that feeds, fires and groups to the limit of your gear is well worth the tiny bit extra in cost.
