In an effort to control the wild boar population Yellowhead County and Alberta Agricultural Rural Development are working together offering $50 to individuals who submit a pair of boar ears.

In a news release Yellowhead County says, when running at large, wild boars present a threat to the safety of people and property. The animals have been declared a pest under the Agricultural Pests Act.

The Agricultural Service Boards and the Alberta Agricultural and Rural Development have been working together for the past couple years to eradicate wild boars throughout the province.

People wishing to participate in the pilot program will be required to contact Jennifer Benson at 1-800-814-3935.

Someone is going to go down to the slaughterhouse on kill day....find a bunch of colored hogs ears, and bring them in to finance a new gun purchase. :D

I think they use them for various sausage-like objects that they sell in the food stores. Most wieners are of a questionable gello-like matter.... and guess what.... pig ears are in it.

I have a bunch of smoked pig ears at home for the pup. You guys out west can have them for $10...haha.

hmmm. Earlies farm and garden sells pig ears for about $1 each for dog chews...wonder how clever the ear collectors are.;)

well I phoned em. Yellowhead county hasn't seen any sightings of them. Lac ste. Anne county has had this program in effect since 2003.

I might go try my luck in the sangudo area.

Has anyone here actually seen or killed a wild boar here in Alberta?

It has been rumoured that there are a few "herds" around the Edmonton area. One guy I talked to said they can be seen on the banks of the river in the DT area. Not confirmed, just rumored. Anyone from Edmonton and can comment??

What caliber would be best? i know up close I'd be fairly confident with my 12ga. and maybe out to about 75 yrds with my Sks. But I have my Rem 700 SPS in .223, I know the 40gr Vmaxs would do ok on a coyote. But what about pig? These critters can't get to be more 150 lbs can they? I mean its a wild pig, not a domestic farm animal that gets fattened up. I'm thinking 40gr homeloads trucking out at about 3600 fps should do damage. :sniper:
What do you need for a licence? I have my WinCard but thats it.

Eagleye A good one can go 450 lbs, so I'd be leaving the 223 at home. EE

Well then...
I'm guessing my 6.5x55 (139gr SP) or my M-14 (150gr pwrpoints) will be the safe way to go.
Still would like to know what you need for licencing. Or are they considered a pest like a gopher?
