Yellowhead County (Alberta) offers $50 for a pair of boar ears

It has been rumoured that there are a few "herds" around the Edmonton area. One guy I talked to said they can be seen on the banks of the river in the DT area. Not confirmed, just rumored. Anyone from Edmonton and can comment??

Naw, I lived downtown until this fall, and the noisy/fuzzy/foul smelling herds were just homeless drunks getting in touch with their nomadic roots.

Fair few coyotes and rabbits along the river valley by the HL bridge, but the only pigs were of the two-legged variety.

I saw a pair of them last Nov out side of Tofield, could have easily shot them, but the local I was with thought they may have been some ones pets???
Locals come up with goofy thoughts some times. FS

I've lived here for 8 years and have never heard of it. Maybe at the West Edmonton Mall? It's amazing what you can see there sometimes!!

Well then...
I'm guessing my 6.5x55 (139gr SP) or my M-14 (150gr pwrpoints) will be the safe way to go.
Still would like to know what you need for licencing. Or are they considered a pest like a gopher?

All you need is permission to access the land-

They are pests and cause a hellovalota damage.

Bacon for breakfast!!

A friend of mine is a hunting guide(who lives on Lac St Anne) and he told me that the wild boars used to be on a penned hunting farm years ago, but it was outlawed, so the owner released them into the wild. He got one somewhere near mayerthorpe, hasnt seen one in a few years though!

Well if any are still alive after this last few weeks of minus 25 to 40 degree weather I'd be surprised. These are Winterpigs. for sure

This year I never spotted any of the two known herds up here but there was one batch of them south of Nampa, the other herd of them was(if they haven't been all shot) up near Deadwood. I had seen the herd around Nampa but didn't believe anyone about the Deadwood herd until a couple buddies showed up at the hunting cabin with one.

I spend a lot of time up in the yellowhead lac st. anne and brazeau county areas and have only seen one wild boar wouldn't get my hopes up on finding one while deliberatly looking.

What caliber would be best? i know up close I'd be fairly confident with my 12ga. and maybe out to about 75 yrds with my Sks. But I have my Rem 700 SPS in .223, I know the 40gr Vmaxs would do ok on a coyote. But what about pig? These critters can't get to be more 150 lbs can they? I mean its a wild pig, not a domestic farm animal that gets fattened up. I'm thinking 40gr homeloads trucking out at about 3600 fps should do damage. :sniper:
What do you need for a licence? I have my WinCard but thats it.
A buddy of mine who has shot them and taxedermied (sp?) a few told me they have a kind of 'body armor' along the ribs which is like a really thick hide. I guess it's to protect from other pigs tusks in a fight. He said they are really tasty though. A HP might be better than a V-Max.

I would think that one should be able to lure them in with bait like hog pellets soaked in sour milk...and it would probably be effective almost any time of day. I bet some of these guys are over 250 lbs though, and based on some of the domestic boars I've seen that is a conservative estimate...I would use 7.62X39 or .308 softtips just to knock them over...then you probably want to finish them off with one between the eyes.

I live in Y'Head County. In the middle of the best hunting, fringe areas. Think there's maybe 4....yup, about 4 wild pigs in the whole county and I can't find 'em. Love to stuff a .45-70 RN thru one...

Thinking back to my Military days while serving in West Germany. We used to train lots in a place we called the canter area. This was deep in the black forest (Schwarzwald) south west Germany. We all were well aware of the presence of Wild German boar and their potential danger. I only seen them during the night when I was on sentry duty around our bivouac. They usually came right to the garbage pile and started ripping it apart. We watched them in the pitch black night through our night vision goggles. One night their was a bunch of them at the pile, and one REALLY stood out as being a Monster Brute... Made me want to get the heck outta there. Back in garrison the town of Lahr located near the Rhine river, me and my at the time German girlfriend would go to the nature area's along the river for walks through the woods, the whole time knowing that boar were in those woods too. bUT I never saw any boar during the day. But I was'nt bush wacking and looking for them either.. I had other things on my mind on those walks... hehe like some fresh deutsch booby

Seems they may be nocturnal critters
