yes or no..Glock or Colt 1911- which has the better service life???

two very close choices...i would get both...have a brand new glock 17 on order along with a ati trojan shortly...cant go wrong with either, they are both classics within their own respective categories...as far as service life, you would need to go into a mil spec 1911 to come close to a glock tho...glocks are absolutely simple...so much less to go wrong
 
What I have read, I would say the Glock can out-live a 1911 from sheer rounds down range, abuse and have far fewer malfunctions. Having said that, the 1911 fits smaller hands far better than the double-stack Glock 21 and 21 SF. In fact the 1911 fits smaller hands far better than the the CF pistol (Browning HP).
Since we in Canada do not yet have the right to CCW perhaps the more ergonomic 1911 would be a better choice. However, if you are planning to use the pistol to save your life then the Glock which can be carried charged is the better option.

In what kind of situation? UV rays will kill a Glock and rust will kill a 1911 (in extreme cases for both).

Is there measurable wear on the frames and slides of these guns after 500 rounds, 1000 rounds, 10,000 rounds?
A good 1911, forged steel, good fitting and quality parts and a respectable maintenance schedule, will last a long, long time, as will the Glock.

The answer nobody wants to hear is, "You couldn't afford to wear either one out" because it's true but for scientific purposes there would be so many variables.
 
Lets see --- my 1911 was made in 1942 and it is still going bang every time I pull the trigger.
My sons Glock was taken back to the store and traded in on another old 1911

Shh don't tell that to the thousands of CCW permit holder in the US. I am not sure what "charged" is but cocked and locked seem charged to me.

Glock would still be my choice for the OP's question.

ONE 1911 can last 100 years of actual use using the same parts at the end as it started with? or do you mean it can sit idle for 100 years and not fail?

there's two ways of looking at "service life"

1 - being able to find replacement parts to keep things going and replace stuff as it breaks, fully aware that eventually not one single item will remain from the gun that started, but "in essence" it will still be the same TYPE of gun

2 - being able to use THE ONE GUN without having to replace parts every 1000 rounds, so that the gun at the end is the exact same as at the beginning (minus whatever metal is worn off through use)

i think that in case 1, the 1911 would win. but in case 2, i'd bet on the glock.

Do you mean as in 'Which has a longer period during which it will remain useful?', or rather 'Which takes longer to perform service on, and / or which needs more service to remain in a useful state?'
