Good afternoon, folks.

These are probably easy answers but after hours of looking, I'm not finding them, though I've done a pretty good job at deciphering the other marks.

On a 1916 (or 18?) SMLE MK III*

"ESSEX" stamped on the top of the barrel, just rear of the rear sight.

Is it a regimental marking?

Also on the rearmost portion of the barrel is stamped 14.4.42 and '37. Obviously dates, but what would be the significance of them?

Thanks.

"ESSEX" stamped on the barrel was a British company that converted military into sporters. It should also be british proofed on the barrel knox. Another common stamping is "Surrey". These rifles were commonly sold in Eatons, Sears, CTC, HBC and other small retailers.
