Yet another example of beaurocratic politically correct idiocy

The MNR has a policy of trying to restore woodland caribou numbers in some WMUs by reducing moose populations through issuing more adult tags. In other areas with far healthier moose populations, they restrict the number of tags. You can look this up for yourself on the internet. In this case the local First Nation actually asked the MNR to intervene by culling the wolves. One would think if there were too many caribou, a better solution would have been to cull wolves and relocate caribou.

What puzzles me is why they let this situation go this far-the outcome was entirely predictable ..if this were a rancher, they wouldn't stand idly by,they would shoot some wolves ,not sacrifice the whole herd while they 'studied' it

There are plenty of wolves, enough that no one should really be concerned about removing 4 from an island. On the flip side, if there get to be too many caribou that is an obvious new and desirable hunting opportunity. Something I would have thought would be fairly popular in, oh I don't know, a hunting community?

Is this not the way of nature, the herbivores move to an area multiply, the carnivores follow the herbivores, the carnivores eat the herbivores. Carnivores numbers increase, herbivore numbers decrease. And at a tipping point the opposite happens carnivore numbers fall and the herbivores numbers increase until a balance point is found. Obviously the herbivore numbers where to large and now it is the opposite, nothing wrong here just nature taking it's course.

you are just cruising CGN finding topics and threads to inject your "devils advocate" comments ...... or better put Trolling. If it's not an 80% receiver thread it's a hunting thread. My new hobby is gonna be to follow you around on CGN and expose your little game.
You and your kind do not belong here as your only purpose to be here is to troll members threads with your bullsh*te.

Dude you gotta put that guy on the ignore list. I didn't even know there was still people who read his crap.

Haven't seen the original article, but if the original 4 came over in 2012, quite probable. People don't understand how much they can take out until they see it first hand, especially when it comes to calving season.

The biologist in question is my next door neighbor. We worked together for close to 20 years.

Just to put some sanity back into some of the comments:

Michipicoten Island is ~ 23 miles off shore from Wawa and the mainland in Lake Superior. It is approximately 185 sq Km in size

Woodland Caribou were reintroduced to the island in the early 80's as a way of reducing the population on the Slate Islands (at that time the furthest southern refuge population of woodland caribou in Ontario and ~7 miles offshore of Terrace Bay in Lake Superior) due to over population and concerns of habitat degradation

Wolves moved onto both islands during the winter of 2014/15 or 2015/16 - I forget which, but the lake froze out to the island both winters.

The MNR collared wolves with GPS trackers on Michipicoten Island the first winter there, they walked back to the mainland and then back to the island on the ice at least once.

There have been no indications that the habitat could not support the number of caribou on Michipicoten Island, and surveys were done ~ 6 years ago to my remembrance.

Before I retired, they found that wolves were killing on average 3 caribou per week on Michipicoten Island. My neighbour estimated that would pretty much wipe out the population in 18 - 24 month. I have been retired 19 months.

Woodland caribou are very vulnerable to predation. they are classed as a threatened species in the province. In my opinion, it would be a shame not to do something to protect them on Michipicoten Island.

My sentiments exactly ,woodland caribou are not plentiful like white tail deer and anything we can do to preserve them, the better.if they become too numerous for their range on the island which could be kept preditor free , that provides an unique nursery opportunity to reintroduce them to other areas.its not rocket science. But unless something is done immediately ,it's game over

I would think the caribou got to the island just like the wolves they walked on the ice, this cycle has probably happened several times over the centuries.

Caribou airlift started yesterday. A Hughes 500 net gun chopper, a MNR Aerostar and a contract Hughes 212 at the airport on Friday. Yesterday they apparently caught 4 cows and a bull. Heard them taking off this morning while I was coyote hunting. They are hauling them up to the Slate Island s off Terrace Bay. Hopefully the lake doesn't freeze out to there and have the wolves walk out there again.

I mean at least they're doing something so can't complain too much but i'll do my best.

Chopper, Net Gun, MNR Aerostar and contract hughes 212.... sounds $$$. i just don't understand how hard it is to just hire a couple trappers and get rid of the wolves for a significant fraction of the cost... leave the darn caribou alone. maybe they'll feel all high and mighty not directly killing the wolves but as mentioned earlier, make no mistake the wolves will still die via starvation when there are no more caribou to eat. Their only saving grace is if the ice freezes again this winter and they have the recognition to leave the island during that window.

Yup, on my ignore list too. There are 8-12 of these clowns who have polluted CGN in the last yr or 2. I don't understand why the owners don't just ban them. If someone is a pain I remove them from my life, why is CGN different?

So with the caribou being removed( at great expense ) , now the wolves starve, what's 'natural' about that? The obvious solution was to cull some wolves and keep the prey /preditor numbers in balance so BOTH could co exist
