So I keep reading about hunters taking shots at Moose that are 400 meters away, and I was wondering...

Does one really need to be this far away from a Moose?

Are they like Über skittish or something?

Discuss...

In most cases definitely not but for some of us, it's just something we want to do but moose can be very skitterish in some instances and in others they seem like total idiots. I'd say most moose are taken at under 150 yards.....

Most of the long distance moose I have shot were stalked on to close the distance. Some of them were deliberately flanked to get them closer to the road.If you ever shoot a moose across a big swamp and have to spend all day and most of the night getting it out, you will be a lot more careful after that. Don't ask me how I know.........:D

Depends on the situation. Most guys don't go looking exclusively for a 400yd shot, but sometimes you either take it or pass.

If I see a moose at the end of a cutblock, and there's no way to get closer, except to walk straight at it, I'd take the shot from a solid rest, like a log/tree...

Calum,

Are some of you mega-poster types having a competition to try posting the most potentially contentious question in which no agreement is possible just to sit back and enjoy the show, or what??

As for me, I like moose and don't shoot at them from 400 m. At least not yet...

All my shots have been within 100 yds, some like 20. What's with the across the lake stuff?

I like the idea of the closer to the trail type shots as advised above, that works for me!

Thanx for your concern, but I assure you that my question is sincere. :D

While I doubt I will ever draw a Moose tag out here in BC, I like to know as much as I can about all forms of hunting in Canada and all about our indigionious critters.

And the past several threads seemed to be about long distance hunting with some mention of Moose and such. Yet in almost every picture I see of a Moose they are standing around within 50 yards of the guy with a camera like they are a dumbfounded circus pony. :D

Furthermore I have met several older hunters over the years that use nothing more then a Win 30/30 for everything in BC short of Migratory birds (and Moose)...so I was confused over the issue of necessary distance.

I wonder what these old timers are doing differently then others?

Actually our Hunting course instructor warned us about this as well.
He said he made this mistake once. :D

I've shot 4 moose. Average range was 150 yards. I've stalked moose (while hunting deer), and found getting within 200 yards in open terrain is doable most of the time if you're patient and they're feeding

Hunting, mostly.

I like how you put that. Here, moose are different than deer and the real work starts immediately after moose fall down.

In fairness, Western conditions are mostly different from back here, I guess the possibility, if not absolute necessity for longer shots is better. It is a good question to mull over about ethical shooting and practical limits--are we too lazy to hunt?

Some moose come out at quite a distance in clear cuts standing near the edge of them. Sometimes, it's the only shot you'll get. However, mine too were within 100 yards. It depends where you hunt.
