Just did the deed, ordered a shorty Norinco w/ ammo package from CanAm. Been itching to get into the centerfire semi game but no real interest in a restricted rifle.

I see a whole new world of spending opening up for me! That and I guess I need to learn about these rifles. I expect I'll be asking many questions around here in the weeks/months to come.

That's it, just excited about a new purchase!

I just should be getting mine on monday, i ordered mine from T.E.C :)
I'm going to have alot of fun with this one, already signed up for the clinic in petewawa!

I've had mine for about two months now, spent about $400 on accessories. Hit and miss, but my tip for you is stick with M14.ca products to avoid wasting cash.

I received two shorties I ordered from CanAm on Friday and this morning I hit the range for a quick test fire (too cold for much more). Thirty rounds through each one and they both performed flawlessly. Pretty much on target at 100 yards too, though I was just shooting offhand so I have yet to bench them.

For those interested, they came with a proof report from CanAm and a spent .308 test casing. Took about a week from ordering them to getting them at the door, and I couldn't ask for better service from the Canada Ammo folks.

I'm pretty excited for warmer weather and a few free afternoons :D

We'll see. Don't really plan on just dumping more money into it right away. Plan on trying it out as is and getting a feel for the rifle. A person can adapt to a firearm. Not really an "accessory" guy, I like basic stuff. As long as it functions properly, any mods I do can happen as I see fit. Maybe some sort of optics upgrade, but I'm going to start out with the factory irons. If anything, maybe a couple more mags and a good sling. Time will tell.

I'm with you on that one, I'm just going to have to figure out a load...this will be my bush gun for moose and deer. Who know's, it may turn into my main hunter.....we shall see :)

Happy to hear, I'm new to the game. All my rifles up to this point have been bolt/lever/falling block types. I did own an sks years ago, but it didn't stick around long enough to get really familiar with. If it turns out that we aren't compatible its not that much of an investment.

I just ordered a shorty with the ammo combo from CanAm...I wonder if I will get the proof report and test casing too? Do they do a fairly intense inspection process before shipping out? If so that is a relief from the bad Norinco horror stories you sometimes hear haha

The proof report was just a signed paper indicating that they'd performed the proof test with an over-pressure round and who the tester was. There was no indication that they'd done any other inspections. Now having said that, I haven't been able to find any obvious flaws on either rifle (though my M14 expertise is limited to what I've read in the stickies here) so they may have checked them over before shipping them.

Solid

If you get hooked, I'm sure we'll see your thread :D

I haven't even received the rifle yet and I found myself shopping for upgrades already. Just figured I'd look for some good basic literature on them, so went to the Brownells site to see if they have the Kuhnhausen book. Next thing I knew I was adding stuff to my cart "Ooh, that looks nice", "That's gotta help", etc. Pulled the plug before paying for it, I need to focus here people!

I've never really been a hotrod/customize kind of guy with firearms (except for a couple rimfires), not sure why this one has me all messed up. Maybe its just from reading about all the upgrading people here do, I guess I'm sort of expecting the rifle will need work. Just gotta be patient.

If you do opt for ANY "accurizations" or "mods" from what I can tell the best $$$ you can spend is a NM op-rod spring guide (like SADLAK) and a USGI spring. Makes such a huge improvement in smoothness of action...if you only ever take you're M305 apart once in you're entire life, be it to install these. If you neglect from buying yourself a flat of Keith's for one week you can pay for these cheap and effective upgrades!!!!

That being said probably the BEST accessories I have purchased for mine has been the "M14 Owners Guide" and the "M14 Complete Assembly Guide". Both from Brownelles.

Just 2 cents from someone who has.

Spend the money on some ammo. Give it 500 rounds. Learn how it works and how to maintain it.

The aftermarket companies will still be there.

When I first got my rifle, the action was really hard to cycle. A couple hundred rounds of ammo through it helped, along with light polishing of the trigger. I may put a Garand spring on the hammer, but I'm not sure where to get one. Greasing behind the lugs helped.

The upgrades didn't seem to make my gun moar accurate, just more consistent groupings.
