Yote hunting bait or call

I found a nice spot on the river close to a few fields; before I go out I would like your input. What kind of calls do you guys use? I have a rabbit in distress call and was planning on using bait like a deer or beaver. Is it wise to spend a lot of effort on one spot or should I cover more terrain and forget the bait?

Use a howler to locate them. They should answer back. Then hit them with the dinner bell. Rabbit in distress is what we use.

Thats what the tape that came with my calls said.......
It has sort of worked for us :redface:
 
if you got the bait and its legal to put it out, then by all means go ahead and do that.

you can check your bait early in the AM and if theres nothing on it, try some calling setups anyways

Try some interrogation howls at the bait if nothing is around. If there is a pack around, being territorial, they might show up to chase the intruder off the bait.

It's also becoming breeding season. Time to howl more.
 
Could you give me an idea of how you call. Five six calls spread on 10 mins.? Start of slow? Go at it like there's no tomorow?

For Coyotes baiting would probably be a good way to bag a few of the rascals but for me its just too time consuming, expensive (gas and such) and I like calling better.


I plan on trying a little bait pile later in the year for some wolves, I plan on using beaver carcasses. A trapper I know gave me a little hint he has used before. He told me to save one of the beaver carcasses from the bait pile and drag it all over the place tied up behind the ATV.

The method that they suggest on the tape was a few yips, then howl. Few yips, howl. Then a couple long howls.

you could try with a rabbit distress call :


start of quiet and work your way louder with every series of screams

call for 30 seconds and go silent for 2-5 minutes, watching for an incoming coyote with your EYES. move your head only as fast as the second hand on a watch.

call up to 30 minutes in each location before moving on 400-800 meters and trying again. remmeber to keep wind in your favor and set up accordingly.
 
Usually the single long howl without yips is what the pros start off with. If you get replies than you can start answering back with what they are throwing at you.

Usually after 5 minutes if nothing responds or shows up, they move onto the distress calls of rabbits( or hare up here).

Randy Andersson's DVD's (calling all coyotes) are amazing. Cheap too. Get a couple of guys to throw a couple of bucks in each and share them. They are a great learning tool.
