Yotes went for fawn

On my way to my spot this Sunday, the first deer I saw was a fawn feeding by the side of the road, pretty and cute. And he/she was even looking at me while I slowed my truck down looking at it. Then after 150 yards or so I passed this little one, two yotes, one black one brown, were sneakily trotting towards the fawn, also on the side of the road and not giving a #### about my truck passing them. I couldn't do anything to save the fawn as it was still dark:( . All I could do was praying for the little one.

We hunt west central Manitoba and have noticed the steady decline in whitetail numbers over the last 3 seasons. Landowners and pasture manager on our hunting area said they had not seen a doe with fawn this past summer.

What is amazing is the numbers of coyote we are seeing. Last November while sitting on stand I saw no less than 50 yotes in 4 days! The things were screaming all night long to all points on the compass.

Could the deer decline in this area be due to a series of heavy snow winters, sport/aboriginal hunting overharvest, high coyote numbers, land use changes, or a combination of the aforementioned?

We feel this decline is mainly a local thing as other western regions and SE areas are reporting healthy whitetail numbers.

How do other western Manitoba hunters feel about deer numbers in their favorite deer haunts?

black coyote eh?

anyways, if you guys are worried about predation on your deer herds, go out and hunt some predators in the winter! DOnt sit at home behind your computer and whine and moan about lack of fawn numbers and such, go out and make a difference! I feel like Gibbs505!!! RAHH!!!

do you partake in hunting?

I have noticed that in the area I hunt NW of Brandon. I feel that since about 97 there has been a steady decline in numbers. We do not see the numbers we used to. Part of me wonders if it is just the yotes or if it is man as well. Since the mid 90's there have been a lot more hunters in the area due to the one time great numbers of whitetails. Unfortunately the hunters are still there. That's why I am becoming a strong advocate of management hunting.

Calvin, yes I am an avid whitetail hunter. We hunt NE of Brandon(since 1984) and yes I also do feel that the super high yote numbers are due to once abundant deer in this region. Mange will set in and the yotes will die out... guess its natures way.

I have shot more than my share of coyotes but we refrain from capping any during the deer season for obvious reasons. Just that I dont feel preditor control works on a grand scale as nature is the ultimate manager...MHO.

Took the words right out of my mouth.
I went by a sheep farm this spring and saw all the sheep huddled together in the corner of the coral, near the road, then saw a blood covered dead sheep in the middle of the pen with crows eating away. It was quite a contrast with white, red and black:eek: This pen was beside the farm house. After speaking to the farm hand she said they moved all the sheep up here because the coyotes masacured 9 out in the far field the weekend before!!!!!
I might take up predator hunting anyways!;)

Saw one myself last fall in a gravel pit, I think it was a coydog, looked exactly like the regular colored coyote it was with only this one would come in closer to us than the other. Must have been a half breed.

Found a dead yote on the side of my deer camp driveway on Sunday, noticed some crows when I pulled in a figured for sure it was a dead deer that nobody bothered to follow up on seeing as how bow season was open. Was kinda surprised to find a huge yote laying there about 50 yds off the edge of the driveway. Found out tonight that one of the guys in my deer camp took a poke at one a couple weeks ago walking back to the camp and it was hanging around the generator shed all weekend, he thought he missed it all together as there was no hair or blood on his recovered arrow, he figured it died of fright.;)

I hunted in Spruce Woods for the first time this year. I saw some deer, but was surprised as to how many coyotes I heard howling. Early in the summer scouting I came across a 'yote at about 20 yards...he didn't even see me. I also had one come 20 yards by my stand while bowhunting 1 day. But wow! You sure hear them lots!

:D I know. I actually have a jackrabbit call but have never really used it. I think I should try this winter.

I remember the first time I tried calling several years ago. A hunting buddy was with me, and while we were watching the field in front of us, a coyote came charging along the brushline we were sitting in.

In the end, the hunters and the hunted all became acquainted with each other at a distance of about 48 inches. Things ended poorly for 'ol Wiley, but the survivors also needed a change of underwear.

So if you're going to have your first go at this, be prepared -- fix a bayonet! :p

Careful -- it's addictive!

Last year our Liberal provincial gov't, in its immense wisdom , made you buy a special licence to hunt wolves and/or coyotes....a small game license was sufficient before...with no limit ...now there is a limit of two . You can shoot two wolves, or two coyotes, or one wolf and one coyote .
Must be working:rolleyes: 'cause we have lottsa deer .

They should make it mandatory to qualify for extra free deer tags that you take in at least 3 or 4 dead yotes, with or without fur!
Get you all out of bed then wouldnt it. Luckily our biggest predator is the red fox, we have no bag limit and since the hunting with dogs ban we dont have to leave any for the gents in pink on horses.
In fact we have no bag limit for anything and no closed season for predators or pests and that includes Canada Geese.
Forgot to add just to rub it in, we can hunt at night with lamps or NV gear and use silencers!

so uh...

How many guns are restricted over there? huh? okay thanks

Restricted? no such category, if you have a license you can buy anything applied for? Getting various sections is another thing. We have section 1, all rifles, not pump or semi (1988 act) and all shotguns holding more than 3 rounds total or barrels less than 24 inches. You just need to explain what you want them for, membership of a club or having shooting land is ok. section 2 which is all other shotguns and you can get as many as you can buy. Section 5 which is automatic weapons and post 1919 pistols. These are usually export dealers or miltary contractors (as in supplies not mercs) and noot usually jo public. Section & which has 2 categories 1 & 3. This is for pre 1919 or collectable pistols. Most are kept at clubs but a fair few are kept at home if the ammo is obselete, no longer available.
You can get a sect 1 license for silenced .22, or silenced centrefire rifles easily enough on the principle of health and safety for pest and deer control. You then need no extra license or outdoor car, tag or permit to shoot all year! Yes here we have an all year deer season. there are closed seasons based on ### but you can effectively shoot deer all year. We are still overun with deer! so £46 for a 5 tear license which allows me all year shooting? A deal I think.

Adding to your SKS Kill list. :D

That's why I'm souping up this SKS a bit. ;) Hope I'll have some dog stew with some moonshine for the winter, really good stuff.
