A 500lb Tiger suddenly charges out of a thicket 50-yards away he's on the
dead run and one thing is clear - it's him or you. In memory of the great Tiger Hunter Jim Corbett(see below) you only have two rounds  - what rifle are you bringing to this big showdown?

Jim Corbett was born of English ancestory in the town of Naini Tal in the Kumaon foothills of the Himalayas. He was a hunter and fishing enthusiast in early life but took to big game photography later. Between 1907 and 1938, Corbett hunted down at least a dozen man-eaters. His gun of choice was a 450/400 Double Rifle.

The Man-eating Leopard of Rudraprayag

Since you'd only have time for 1 shot anyway I'd want it to count. Familiarity with the rifle would be more important than caliber really. I'd take my .338WM scope set on 1.5X, with a 250gr Nosler Partition.

"Bang him!!"

A shotgun with birdshot to blind him

It works for bears right?:p

Seriously, BRNO 602 CRF in .375 H&H with 300 gr softpoints.

And try to get as low as you can to avoid shooting over.

Can we first hear the Tiger's side of the story? I mean...it's gotta eat, you know?

Just kidding.

SXS Rifle in any big calibre. I'm not picky. I just wanna live to eat another dinner.

I think one of the advantages of those old cordite/nitro rifles was if you missed your target - the explosion might just persuade him to veer away and
save your bacon.:D

Ahsan: Read the Corbett Omnibus ... and thanks for the Anderson tip.

If Tony is at a full run, just kiss your buttocks good-bye. Not that you'd have time to do so. Tony can run at about 60 KPH. From 50 yards, Tony will be on you in 2 seconds. That might give you enough time to say, "Oh, shi...".

At the given distance,i would want a pistol, any caliber loaded with Hollow Points,so i can shoot myself in the head.Propably less painful than being chewed on by a Tiger.

He also used the 577/450 Martini enfield. A 500 modified Cordite rifle of unknown make, a 275 Rigby to banish the rudrapragy lepoard and at least one tiger. And a shotgun to kill the Panar leopard after it's 400th kill!

It was all iron sights kills too wasn't it!? Or was the scope starting to be common in the 1920's?

MY Wife! She got rid of the 2(two) maneating Cougars I ran into @ the Hotel last month.

LOL! Indeed, there are some things that you don't mess with in life, one is man eating tigers, the other is your spouse. That kitty would be toast. What taxidermy pose will she mount it in Ike?:p

If I remember Peter Capsticks' "follow up" gear, it included a 12 guage pump with slugs and SSG alternated. Don't forget the chainmail too.

Definately a double rifle. You can shoot the second shot before you can cycle a bolt. Corbett did well with the 450/400, though anything from 375 Flanged/369 Purdey and up would be fine IMO. I have the Omnibus and it is a must read. I had no desire to go to India before I read it, but now I want to climb the mountains, walk the trails, and fish the rivers in Northern India where Corbett had his adventures. Seems I was born 80 years too late. Imagine hunting India and Africa in the '20's.
