You and a Man Eating Tiger - What Rifle?

 I think several CGN'ers, including 505 Gibbs, just had a stroke.
No, just about died of envy though!!

True, but as many of us realized years ago, practicality is not often a major impetus in acquiring firearms! I remember handling a .470 Nitro double rifle at the big gun show in Coquitlam two years ago. I didn't buy it, of course, but I could feel my eyes glazing over.

I felt the same holding a Rigby double in 470 a few years ago myself!!

My favourite Corbett line is from "The Muktesar Man-Eater" :

"The near proximity of a tiger in daylight, even when it has not seen you, causes a disturbance in the blood stream. When the tiger is not an ordinary one, however, but a man-eater and the time is ten o'clock on a dark night, and you know the man-eater is watching you, the disturbance in the blood stream becomes a storm."

The man had a way with words - what do we call a "disturbance in the blood stream" in today's lingo?

Shot this Tiger with a hikon - a few years back at Ranthambhor, Rajasthan - open jeep and about 25 yrds - definitely felt a slight disturbance in the blood. :D

Depending on the circumstances, perhaps "laundry trouble"? (Maybe this is why African safari camps offer a daily laundry service!)

great pic! Unfortunately, those magnificent animals are fast on a decline in SE Asia due to so many reasons....

Mmmm, well, 50yds......I guess the only option would be slugs from a 12guage coach gun.
That way you actually have a hope of swinging the gun in time, if you're looking in the right direction that is. :(
Tod's idea of a BAR in 325 WSM is probably not a bad one so long as it's packing hot loaded 220gn Woodleigh Protected Points and you can have one in the chamber as well as 3 in the mag.
Double rifles are great......so long as you aren't the one being stalked!

I think I've found the solution on the Griffin & Howe "Used Rifles" page:

Greener_8_bore.jpg

8 bore, left barrel rifled, right smooth. Even an aftermarket (since it was made in 1881) "light pipe" front sight!

And for CGN'ers faced with the dilemma of whether to replace the pickup or buy that special rifle for the African safari, Griffin & Howe also have this on offer: (Warning: Gibbs505 should be seated before viewing!)

A steal at $40,500 USD.

Great answers, stories, & pictures guys.

The scenario has always interested me. Our next door neighbour's great uncle who served in India during the British Raj succumbed to a wound (septic scratch) from a Tiger in the early 1930's. He was hunting - wounded it but then went after it - into the elephant grass. The Tiger was waiting ( something tells me it was alot less then 50 yrds ... or feet), clawed him and he didn't get the wound treated in time.

My business takes me to india a few time a year ... so have been on quite a few safaris .... and with the natural jungle terrain and hiding ability of the Tiger, I think the 50 yrd scenario its quite liberal!

Keep the solutions coming ....:D
