You think ammo's expensive now

I didn't realize that lead evaporates and completely ceases to exist once I shoot it at a dirt mound.

EDIT: Hey CanAM, can't you use really soft steel? How come copper (Barnes TSX) bullets can work and not soft iron? Doesn't tin work?
 
there is such a thing as leaded steel which is as soft as you can go and still be considered steel but it is still harder than the hardest lead not sure how it compares to copper tho
 
We use lead and copper for a reason. Believe me if you could use a cheaper material, the Russians and Germans would have used it during the war. Best we can do is steel jacket or sintered iron frangible bullets (which apparently NRCAN now considers AP). Even copper bullets have to be engineered very carefully to control pressure. Copper and steel need to be turned, thus dramatically increasing the cost over drawn bullets.

So Norinco Steel core and Czech steel core rounds aren't actually steel?
 
People have been saying we'll run out of resources since Malthus in the 18th century. While I'm a big fan of recycling, I tend to be skeptical of reports such as these.
 
I remember some old guy telling me that his high school textbooks said we'll run out of some types of minerals by the 80s.
 
Oh cripes, there will always be minerals and oil so long as the price is right.

When oil goes back to $100 and stays there, there will be more oil available than ever. The Saudis invested in this huge mega$$$ project to pump salt water an enormous distance to a special facility to extract oil from a difficult area. Sorry I am not a technical type with this stuff.

But I do agree that useless govts around the world should focus on reusing and recycling stuff more. There are lots of usable resources going into landfill. The damn landfills are growing exponentially as this throw away society gets worse. This is the REAL problem - NOT global warming crap!!!!

Too true, we're told to throw away our old appliances because they're not "energy efficient", but the problem is the old ones are sent to the landfill, and the new ones follow in another 5 years...

What we need is for things to be made so that they are easily repaired (like a good gun :D), and not thrown away when something breaks.
