Youngsters First Deer Rifle-opinions. d/l .243?

Yep this fulla is a young dude, doesnt like the sound much but thank gad for ear plugs.

yeh i think anything over 260rem is getting into 'big gun country', an i got a safe or two full of them!

rightio some great info passed on, im liking the 243 downloaded idea very much

I’m going to use my 260 Remington for this falls deer hunting
In a T3 rifle. Hardly any recoil.
Nice short action. Accurate.
Lots of bullet choices.

Edit
And as previous mentioned buy the best scope you can afford and if necessary buy a cheaper rifle
Good glass on a cheap rifle is better than cheap glass on any rifle

What are the hunting conditions? May not even need or want a scope. Most people today don't even try to shoot iron sights, and it leaves them handicapped in close hunting conditions; and makes them over confident to try out of range shots. Most deer are taken well under 100 yards, If you can't hit your target consistently well with iron sighs at 100 yards, you certainly won't with a scope in field conditions.

My first moose, and the first for all three of my older brothers, five in total. Ruger M77 tang 243.

It sits in lockup, i have better choices. Hasnt been out in years, never to be sold. It was my oldest brothers, sold to #2. I paid a substantial price to keep it from being sold by SIL.

Almost zero recoil. Super light. Should be limited to Sub 300lbs animals, unless close range.

Personally, whatever you choose, if it was 243, you wouldn't regret it. Rest assured, many people struggle with this choice, if you come to a place of moving on. You would have no problem selling, and recovering most of your investment.

You probably got all the advice you need, but another thought would be a reduced load .308. I put together what I think was a 70% load of H4895 (31.9 gn) and a 150 gr. Hornady sst for one of my grandsons last fall, for his first year of deer hunting. He ended up taking a large mule deer with it. Recoil is very mild, and it's a load that gave good accuracy. As he's able to handle more recoil, we can simply increase the bullet weight and powder charge suitable to the intended game, and he can continue to use the same rifle for a number of years. Not by my own measure, but from my data source, the velocity of the reduced load was about 2200 fps.

You don't say what ranges you're expecting to be shooting at, but for 100-150 yd. shots, I love my Howa mini in 7.62X39. I handload and it's deadly accurate and good deer medicine.
