Your 3-Gun Rifle Setup?

Yeah, beltfed, I see your point. But that's a pretty spendy modification. OP has done a quick and cheap fix that will get him rolling. Nice job Marty!

With all that weight, he probably won't have much need for a competitive compensator, either, which saves another stack of cash. Just think of how fast Marty will be able to shoot that thing! And it should be very stable for long range shots. Moving around, maybe not so much. Or maybe he's a gorilla and it won't slow him down. :) Every gun is a compromise.

My baby's almost ready.. Missing a low profile gas block and free float tube since I want something thinner for gripping... Would getting a longer tube and forgetting about irons be a good idea?

Most guys run 22" to 26" shotgun barrels but somehow people feel a 18" rifle barrel is too long.
I like my 16" gun more too. lol Just lighter.

I honestly think my 18" barrel is the best all around. I've used to considerable delight at Borden out to 500 yards, and never had a problem with it for CQB, or 3Gun at my local club.

The nice thing is, since I've got a fair bit of rounds downrange at Borden, I know exactly how my rifle performs at 25, 50, 75, 100, 200, 300, 400, & 500 yards.

Anything shorter is just noisy. 18", polygonal rifling, 75grain handloads, and my rifle is shooting the lights out at any distance.

I *do* have to pull it out an addition 2" over the other guys when working the barricade, but, then again, based on the winter match results at Galt back in february, I was still faster than a lot of the guys with shorter barrels, so....... I think it's a moot point.

18" is perfect.

Mine may be 3.5" shorter but like most things, it isn't the length that counts, it's how you use it! ;)

18-20" barrels may be perfect for service rifle (or 3gun in the US where some shots are 4-600 yds) but for 3gun in SW Ontario where rifle shots are <200yds, length is less of a concern...at least that is what I tell my wife :D

I agree, but, 18" is still perfect. It's not too long, and, despite the shorter ranges in ON, the shorter barrel doesn't offer any advantages except for weight. But, if weight was that big of a concern, you'd see shorter barrels on the 3Gun pro circuit, so, it's not about weight. In fact, it's ONLY advantage is close quarters, which is hardly even an issue even for ON 3Gun as it is. Unless you plan on incorporating more barricades into your stages.....

There's nothing wrong with the shorter guns, but, if they only came in one length? I'd vote for 18" (okay, maybe 18.6, but, that argument is a moot point).

I'd say the longer barrels on the "3Gun pro circuit" are a function of the distances and accuracy required by their stages. This is significantly different than what we face in SW Ontario matches. If those pros never had to shoot their rifles past 150 yds and 5moa was more than adequate, what length do you think they would favour? Weight is ALWAYS important at the pro level...using longer/heavier gear than the job requires is inefficient.
For this amateur from Ontario who doesn't go stateside for 3gun matches (yet), 14" is perfect :p

Different style three gun matches offer different thoughts on rifles used. I think you have it correct though. 18" is an all round great barrel length. I do think you will suffer with a 16" in the larger multigun matches down south. I don't think you will suffer so much with a 20". I believe the weight of the gun is more important than the length for the match and the barrel length stays the same at 18".
