Your 7mm rem mag component preferences

So I just bought a 7mm rem mag, and now it's time to get the reloading gear for it. Main purpose of the rifle is a hunting rifle. When I bought the rifle I picked up 162gr interlocks, and 139gr GMX, with the intention of using the gmx as my hunting bullet of choice if I can get em shooting good.

I still need brass, dies, and primers. I might be getting RCBS dies off the EE for $40, but new LEE dies are only $50+tax, so i haven't totally decided...

What sort of brass do you guys like for this cartridge? And what primers?
 
I've always had good look with ww or rp brass. My preferred load is lots of h4831 and 140gr nosler etips. It's my everything load but the only thing I've killed with it is one bull moose and one coyote. They're travelling at almost 3200fps and sub .5 moa.
 
I've been using Lee dies. I now use the collet die and a body die (FL bushing die with no bushing). On my 4th firing with Nosler brass driving 195 Berger EOLs over 2900fps with Retumbo. I use Barnes 150 T-TSX in my hunting rifle though. Shooting the last of this IMR 4350 batch then will try work something up with H4831SC. If that doesn't go wel I'll try something else. Federal 215 primers.
 
Nosler brass, Redding FL and NS dies, Forster seater, bullets usually Accubonds for hunting, ELD-M or Barnes Burners for targets.
 
I use an RCBS Competition die set for reloading my 7mm Rem Mag.
160 grain Accubonds, large charge of Norma MRP, CCI 250 primer
all in Winchester brass. Sub-moa in my rifle ay 3060 fps. Dave.
 
Anyone using federal brass? That seems to be the most available on the EE, although I had a bad experience with federal factory ammo for my 270 that led to me scraping all my fed brass in that caliber (blew out two or three primers in one box, then my dumb ass got that brass mixed in with my other boxes so I scrapped it all, I had plenty of winchester brass so it wasn't worth the hassle)...
 
I'm tempted to switch from federal brass, but I have a lot and it was practically free. I neck size only and cull before signs of wear show up. Going to save my nickles and buy more premium brass, is Nosler worth it?

The stuff I got is Norma made, easy to tell, so yes, for consistent weight quality brass that is match prepped out of the box it's hard to beat.
 
PRVI brass, excellent quality with a good price.

215M Federal primers.

As for federal brass, I would put it at the bottom of the list as would many others, yes it works but there are better choices.

Why are you thinking of switching? Not getting enough loads from it or...?

The PRVI brass is very reasonably priced... I was planning to get once fired but I might have to consider new as well... Any major advantage to new brass over once fired? I've always bought enough factory ammo to supply brass before getting the reloading gear, but this time around I only bought one box and plan to reload from the get go pretty much.


What powders do people like? I only have IMR4350 on the shelf, and was thinking about trying some RL 22...

For a hunting round, I have found all brass is 'good enough' in all my 7mm rifles. I pay closer attention to my Norma brass, and that is what I save for out in the field, though I haven't seen a significant difference within 300y to worry of brand. Both my guns like 150g TTSX or Nosler Partitions, with a hot load of H1000

There is no way of knowing if 1F is actually 1F.

H1000, 7828 are the two I current use on a few 7RM's I load for.
 
I've found that buying Nosler or Norma loaded ammo both a good way to get a feel for bullet weights your gun might prefer as well as giving you some kickass brass to work with after its initial unloading.
 
Ive just started load development for a friend's new Tikka T3x 7mm. Promising results so far with 160gr Nosler Accubonds, RL26, Federal brass and Fed 215M primers

Oh God no! Who can afford premium factory ammo!? Lol that's the whole reason I reload...

Some calibres, it's actually cheaper to buy loaded Nosler ammo than virgin Nosler brass. I bought 220 rounds of loaded Nosler recently, pulled the bullets, burnt the powder in the back yard, and it all cost less than 220 virgin brass would've. Considering my time to pull bullets too.
 
I like

Nosler Brass.

160gr Accubond or 168gr Berger VLD.

H-1000 or Retumbo

Fed 215 Mag Match primers.

For dies.

All you need is Redding Competition Seater, Redding body die, and Lee Collet die.

Body size your brass and bump shoulder back, and Collet size neck.

Nosler Brass is chamfered, deburred, flashhole uniformed, and ready to load out of box. Great time saver.

I ran Federal brass, went to Prvi. Federal magnum primers and Hornady interlocks over H4350 (people will say too fast for ideal with heavy bullets but for a handful of rounds hunting the elk never noticed and neither did I). If I started over I would be using H4831SC.

I tried the SST bullets but they can expand way too fast especially if they hit bone and come apart. Anything in the big game bullets from 140 to 160 grain will be adequate. I tried 170+ grain bullets and went down after a few post mortems at varying distances.
 
Only thing I will say about PRVI 7mm mag brass is be cautious if loading hot. Nosler/Norma brass weighs around 218gr, PRVI was around 265gr, so a fair bit more brass in those.
