Any body have a low recoil 12ga. recipe. I have found data for 1 oz. loads but I was pondering using a 7/8 oz. or even 3/4 oz. load:confused:
I teach an introduction to Cowboy Action Shooting course for our annual Women in the Outdoors event with the NWTF. A lot of these ladies have not shot much before so even WW AA Featherlites beat them up pretty bad, so I want less recoil than that.
I have scads of the aforementioned AA hulls. I load on a MEC 600 Jr. so if you can refer your recipe to a powder bushing #, that would be great. I already have 7/8 and 3/4 charge bars. Now I need you to fill in the blanks on powder, powder charge, wad and primer.
Many thanks in advance for your help and advice:D

Lead Shot 12 3/4 oz. Clays Win. 209 Fed. 12SO 16.6 6200 PSI 1200
Lead Shot 12 3/4 oz. Clays Win. 209 Fed. 12SO 17.8 6800 PSI 1250

The above is from the Hodgdon site using WinAA cases. Always check loads you get on forums including this one. Cheers

Thanks Hunter! I have Hodgdon's CAS manual but their lightest load listed was 1oz. They have obviously been busy cooking up more in the meantime:redface: Thanks for the caveat too about data from forums. Even published data can be wrong:eek:

Here I am answering my own question. I checked out Ballistic Products website and their "ask the Curmudgeon" section had some ultralight loads in the archives. All using components BPI sells of course. It was ever thus, eh?

I use a lee loader and shoot 12g 7/8oz loads.
Bushing 148 lee
700x powder
Claybuster 7/8 wads
#8 shot
Noble or cheddite primers
Light recoil and fast lead. Patterns great

If you go to Hodgdon's online reloading guide and select 7/8 oz lead in a Winchester Hull you will get a BUNCH of loads. Pick one that matches components on hand or readily bought nearby and you are set. If you want to drop a 3/4 oz load, pick a 7/8 oz load and just drop 3/4 oz of shot and leave the rest of the recipe the same. If the crimps are dished, add a cheerio on top of the shot before crimping.
