Your Driven Boar hunt experience

I did one in early November in Texas and it was great. We didn't drive them but they did have that option. It seemed you had better luck in the stands and as we only had one day because of work that is what we choose. We ended up getting two each and could have got more if we wanted. The gun the guys in Texas recommend is the AR-15, we used slug guns as we were in thicker bush but I wish I would have thought to ask to borrow a pistol. Being Canadian you don't have opportunities to use a pistol too often. I would recommend a boar hunt for anyone into hunting it was a blast.

A European driven hunt is much different then shooting feral pigs I can assure you. For starters a shooting test is done so you can get your Ausländerjagdschein ( Foreigner's permit ) Then you must pass the wild boar shooting test as well. It is not like going the the US where you are handed a machine gun and told to spray at will. IF you book through a German outfitter they can help you greatly getting the right paperwork so you can have the hunt of a lifetime. There are some excellent videos on the process on youtube ( filed-sports Britain ) . There is also a great deal of tradition and ceremony to it.

i can tell you my experiences ... in our hunting club in France we had +- 80 tags a year just for boars. around 20 beaters and the dogs and 20 posted guys ... for 1200 ha. we had also +-30 roe deer tags and +-2 red deer tags +-4 calves red deer and +-6 doe of red deer tags.

starting the hunt in september-october up to february more if the quota is not reached.

tags were not given to individual so after every drive you collect your kills and help the others then counting and applying tags.

hunting is more around the tradition than just the shooting, and meals are also very important ...

i hunted in sweden also boars but it was not the same and less noise from the dogs: seeing the dogs working is the best part for me.

I hunted driven wild boar and roe deer a few times in Germany. I highly recommend the experience. Much different than our hunting here, more ceremony and tradition, and more regulations too. Sometimes more freedom - such as the opportunity to shoot several animals if you are the one with a lucky spot to watch over. I had a good local friend there who is a master forester and he made all the arrangements. I believe I was given a special consideration for the German hunting licence because of my experience as a Sask. Hunter Education and Canadian Firearms Safety course instructor for many years. I still had to pass a shooting proficiency test in Germany, which was a lot of fun. Shooting real ammo from my regular hunting rifle at images of running boars projected on a special movie screen in an indoor range, hits were recorded by computer. I had to make a minimum of 5/8 clean killing shots on running wild boar to qualify.
The training and practise seemed to work, I shot a couple boars later and had a lot of fun. In the Cologne area they hunt wild boars during group hunts from November to the end of January I believe.
