Your favourite alternate mechanism, that is to say non-bolt action.

Every gun/shooter combo is different... but your experience is certainly not the norm...
We get a lot of grouse and woodcock here that flush really close. My 20ga SxS is choked IC/M and works well for most shooting. Sometimes you see birds farther out that a full choke would work better for.

CRF Bolt action rifles top my list, and I like most of them. The rest of the firearms I mostly have somewhat specific requirements in order for me to enjoy them. :)

Ruger #1- Love them. But only with a rimmed cartridge.

Lever action- Love my Winchester Trapper 45 Colt and the Winchester 1985 in 303 British and .405 Winchester. No 30-30 levers for me! :)

Double rifles- My favorite shotgun style is a SXS and I *want* to love double rifles but I don't. I think I like the idea of double rifles more than I like doubles. :)

Semi Autos- Never been a fan of "hunting" semi auto rifles but I like plenty of military and "black rifle"semi autos. Some that I have enjoyed shooting include M1 Garand, M14, AR15 RFB, SKS and a bunch of other ones. All have their respective place and fun factor. I will probably buy a RFB for hunting at some point and if I could hunt with my AR15 I certainly would.

Pump rifles- Not for me, thanks.

TC/Other similar single shot rifles- Not a fan

I was referring to the observation that he does better on close flushing birds in thick cover with a long full choked gun as opposed to a shorter open choked gun... few would concur with that... certainly not me... I have been hunting woodcock for 40 years... mostly in ultra thick cover... and have settled on a skeet choke with light #8 loads as the best combination... I have bagged hundreds of grouse with that combo also, when woodcock were my primary target... my preferred guns in cover are a Rem 870 Wingmaster 20 gauge with 21" barrel, a Browning Citori 20 gauge Upland with 24" tubes, A Rem 1100 LW 28 gauge with 26" barrel and Browning SXS 20 gauge with 26" barrels... also take the occasional 12 gauge if waterfowl are also being hunted.

Sometime when I'm on the coast lets do a range day, will bring a double rifle or two that you'll probably enjoy. No gun faster for delivering a snap shot of a real cartridge than those, for me. Also like rims in my No.1 and built my last as a 7x57R.

My main rifle is a bolt. My backup rifle is a Remington 760 Gamemaster .308, was my dad main hunting rifle for years, was mine for years...I love how quick you can take a second shot if needed. I sill use it every year, for deer in think brush.

Straight pull for rifle(Blaser) and 22LR(Browning T Bolt). It's hard for me to go back to anything else since I've gotten used to that action type, very slick. I've never had much use for doubles/O/U or single shots, just personal preference. For shotguns, I prefer semi-auto, but I only bird hunt, no sporting clays, etc.

I have hunted with #1s and my double and own upwards of 70 lever guns..........have shot but never hunted with a semi or a pump............serious hunting is only done with bolt guns or the double..........I guess that tells the story right there!!!

Here's a photo of a successful #1 Ruger hunt..........rifle was barreled and chambered by Bevan King in 7mm-300 Wby

Envious of that Stone, where abouts were you? Country looks different than Muncho / Ketchika, guessing Omineca, or maybe north a good ways by all the white on him? Will send the wood blank pics shortly.

To continue the rifle and game pics, my alternate action at work, custom No.1 ".275 Rimmed",

My centerfire long gun hunting & sporting preference goes in this order:

1) Bolt
2) Lever
3) Single
4) Semi
5) Pump

Semi & pump being way distant down the line from the first three choices.
