Your favourite alternate mechanism, that is to say non-bolt action.

My centerfire long gun hunting & sporting preference goes in this order:

1) Bolt
2) Lever
3) Single
4) Semi
5) Pump

Semi & pump being way distant down the line from the first three choices.

I agree!

I favor the single shots falling blocks, I have Rugers and then some original singles latest one being a Gibbs Farquarson then my next is the under lever hammer double rifle.

I am down to two bolt actions now, sooner than later will be down to one ( a .22). Everything else will be a falling block or a break action. Down to a single autoloading shotgun as well, rest are break action.

I like a nice single shot rifle in either a falling block like a Ruger #1 or a Browning 1885 or in a trim little break action. I have always regretted not snatching up the Old Man's TCR '83 before he sold it. Short, light, compact, trim and accurate. Had a 22-250 barrel and 30-06 barrel. It was a fine little rifle. The Germans/Austrians make fine single shots as well but they're a bit spendy.

I also lust after a Double in 303. An old Dominion Grade Holland would be wonderful but even a trade boxlock would be a real treat to own.

I concur wholeheartedly; except of course the 'Dad's rifle', LOL.
I've a Savage 219 in 22 hornet / 30 -30. A P-H 303 bbl'd Martini-Henry and 2 Ruger No. 1's; a 1-b in 7mm RM & a 1-T in 375 Weatherby. Singles in 'other than' actions are cool.
The beat up old M-H is surprisingly fun, don't have to be careful with it is maybe the reason

Here are a couple of quick pictures I took of the Gibb's Farquarson

the 3 in the center are some of my favorites, top gun is a Westley Ricahrds under lever hammer gun in 450 nitro, plain working rifle that shoots very well

The second is the Gibb's made in the mid 1880's is in 500 BPE and is fully engraved and cased

The next is a WW Greener 4 bore smooth bore that was sold in Afirica by WG Rawbone, believe to have been set up as a ball gun for a backup gun, the one below it is a WG Rawbone 10 gauge that was sold when WG Rawbone was on business in Toronto

John

VERY nice and thanks for sharing:).

been looking for bore bore guns all my life and have been luck to have aquired a few, i have a few big bore muzzle loading rifles also this 8 bore is one I like but a little off topic This is the 8 bore with a Thompsen center in 45 guns are about the same size but the bores are different, so I have a 22LR the 45 cal ball and the 8 bore ball for comparision

Well I guess you can say my alternate is a bolt action as Semi auto is by far my favorite, I'm black rifle kind of guy I guess you can say. But I did just pick up a X-Bolt Varmint Special .308 today, looks and feels great! Just waiting for my glass to arrive.
