21 years old, I used a custom Brno zg47 chambered in .280rem. It was my dad’s first hunting rifle, we both took our first deer and moose with it. It still sits in my safe, about 70 years it’s been around the family.
My first deer was a small 5 point buck that I shot with a Browning B78 High Wall in 45/70 when they first came out in around 1978,the one with the deep dish curved butt plate.
I was sitting in a depression on a power line when I heard some coughing and an old guy came out on to the line looked left then right (didn t see me at all where I was sitting) lit up a smoke then proceeded down the line.About five minutes later the buck comes out exactly where the old guy did and started sniffing for his scent. When he turned his head I fired and he took off back in the woods and after waiting 10 minutes or so I went in after him and found him not far away where he tried to go through some thick brush but didn t make it as the exertion made him bleed out faster. The brush was so thick that it almost made him look like he was still standing upright
Mid-1970's, southern Ontario, little spike buck, taken with an Ithaca 37 with raybar front sight. It remains to this day my one and only buckshot deer, switched to slugs afterwards.
I remember being thrilled when we measured its tiny little spikes and found that they were just barely long enough so that it didn't legally qualify as "antlerless".
And, yes, still have that wonderful 37 Featherlight, although it's now wearing a replacement stock I got back in the 1990's when I had the chance to swap my original stock (with corncob front end and hard plastic buttplate) for a new one with a nice Pachmayr pad on it. Shoots much nicer now, but I kinda wish I had the old one back.
My first was a spike horn and I was only 10 years old -- sneaked the Cooey single shot.22 out in August --my dad tanned my behind good for that one LOL.
Found the picture from my first successful big game hunt that i posted earlier in the thread.
I was sure i took that deer with the old .303 but pcs don't lie and my memory must be foggy LOL
Hard earned animals these two were regardless
Shootin stick was a Winchester model 70 Classic Sporter with BOSS in 7mm rem mag.
My biggest deer though, and that point in life where I felt I had finally "graduated" into being a bonafide hunter , well he fell to dad's old BSA enfield .303 while solo hunting rememberance day weekend a short few years later. He's shoulder mounted on my wall
1980. Spike muley with a 6mm Rem and a 100gr pointed soft point.
Took forever for dad to point him out to me in the shadows, and I was too little to hold up a rifle so he rested it over his shoulder.
Can remember it like it was yesterday still, finally saw him, and shot him square broadside through the liver. Deer hit the ground so fast it was like he’d been slapped by the earth.
1981, set my alarm to get me up at 2;30 AM, got up and walked 5 1/2 miles carrying a borrowed Model 94 Winchester.
Hit the back corner of our family owned property, a bit before daybreak, found a good vantage point (since discovered MANY old shell casings there), and cracked a fork buck from that hilltop. Not huge, but was a significant addition to a thin budget, at that time! Alfalfa fed Mulie, is GREAT eating!
2005 I shot a 6 point buck just after daylight with an 870 and rifled slugs. My dad was on other side of the bush and heard me shoot. My uncle was about 500 yards south of me and when I walked up to the buck I heard my uncle shooting. Big buck ran past him and ran over to me. I didn't know that I was able to shoot more than 1 deer as we were party hunting. I watched that buck trot right past me at 30 yards....uncle storms up to me " why didn't you shoot it!?! It almost ran you over?!!?....then he looks down and sees the 6 pointer laying there....."oh nice deer"
Everyone giving me #### for not knowing how party hunting works, While congratulating me on my first deer
I was 18 and shot it with a .243 about 30 yards away. My dad’s friend took me out on his quad and we shot one within 2 hours.
I remember my dad telling me not to #### around because his friend was a serious hunter. We go around a corner and he starts telling me there is a deer right there. I was looking way up a range looking for it only to realize it was right in front of me.
Years later I was with him and was telling him to pull over because there was a 7 point mule deer in front of us. He was looking up a bank and we drove right by it as I was pointing with my mouth open. Haha.
1998
young 4x4
70 yds
Knight Wolverine .50 cal Muzzle Loader (.45 Sabot on top of 2x 50g Pyrodex Pellets).
I was walking across a farmer's field and noticed the Buck running full steam directly towards me. I got down on one knee and took aim. It noticed me at about 70 yards and changed direction for a decent side shot. I then noticed the farmer's dog that had been chasing it.
