Does 17 HMR really need a 24" bbl?

24x is a lot of magnification for a 150 yd cartridge.

I have a custom 17 Fireball that pushes 20gr bullets to over 4000 fps. That would be my go-to varmint gun.

Sadly the 17 Fireball seem to have disappeared from store racks. It's a great little cartridge. MUCH better than the 17HMR and much easier to live with than the wildly overbore 17 Remington.

I have a MRA Renegade in 17-556 KAK that pushes 20gr bullets at 4800fps and 12.5 gr bullets at over 5200 fps. I built it as my varmint gun. Just haven't had a chance to use it, looking forward to hit some gophers, it should be quite a mess

It's still my go to rifle being the CZ 452 Ultralux 22 lr and my Baikal 410 sxs. Has worked well for some time now and still doing the job.

I've taken out a number of squirrels so far and they keep coming.

My browning T bolt in 22lr or my savage 301 in 410 live by the back door of the house. So I guess you can say those are my go to but I always have a gun with me around the farm anything from my little badger to one of my moose hunting rifles they are all my go to rodent gun haha

Deadly accurate and instant death unlike a 22 rimfire - I quit using the 10/22 because of ricochets, too many neighbors these days
