Your longest kill shot with sabot slug in rifled bore

Knowing the slug technology has improved vastly over the last decade or two and with today's equipment (faster twist rate and polymer tip sabot slug) what is your longest kill shot or how far are you comfortable to shoot being an ethical hunter?

I am curious to know if anyone has actually taking games at 150 yards or more with either 12ga or 20 since we all knew we can print pretty tight groups at 100 with our current gear.
 
Slug will kill games even past 100 yards.

Your ability as a shooter plays a bigger role in this decision making.
If you can't CERTAINLY deliver a killshot at those longer ranges, I recommend moving in as close as possible before taking the shot.

I'm still using my grandpa's Ithica Deer Slayer with open sights and where I hunt, my shots wouldn't be any more than 100 yards but honestly, I won't take a shot much past 80 yards, I'm just not comfortable with open sights past that point. I plan on upgrading to a modern slug gun this summer but even then, I would say 100ish yards will be my squeal point.

YouTube is full of videos of those savage slug guns shooting out ridiculous ranges, how many animals get wounded or lost that you dont hear about? I am comfortable with about 100 yards, most are within that distance.

Not that I’ve been trying hard but I’ve yet to find a sabot my rifled barrel likes, once I do I’ll likely draw the line at the 100-150y mark provided 100y groups are decent. I’m not in a zone that limits me to slugs and I’d only really like to hunt bears with it or deer in specific thicker areas so I’ll generally be in the 100y or less territory if I decide to hunt with sabots, it would be more for the fun of hunting large game with a 12g that I’d be using it in the first place.

Hornady sst sabots have been the best so far, 2” groups at 50y, I need to try some different sabots with the ballistic tips. Can’t find any Rem acutips locally to try out, my barrel seems to prefer that style. Anything with a hollow point was pretty lack lustre at the 50y mark.
 
Have a Savage 220 .the farthest so far is A doe at 130 yards . but have Punched paper at 200 with a 3 inch group. Good little gun. Won’t hesitate to shoot 200 Or under. The big thing with these is you have to now your Shot range. Mark ranges or rangefinder.Recommend a slug specific scope with range bdc.
 
I got a buck at 110yds and a pigeon at 50yds last year. First year since switching to a 20ga. I would feel comfortable shooting 150yds at deer. Spent 2 days and $200 in slugs before finding one(accutips) that shot really well. Buck ran approx. 60yds and keeled over just as he got back to the bushline, pigeon DRT.:d
 
Most deer I killed with 12 gauge rifled slugs were in the 30 to 80 yards range with a laminate stocked Remington 870 pump gun topped with a 3-9 Nikon shotgun scope, using three inch Remington 'Accutips' - the farthest mule deer doe was 192 yards from a solid rest. The 300(?) grain slug went right through broadside. I haven't shotgun-hunted deer in a few years, but have a Winchester SXP2 that needs a base and will someday be topped with the same Nikon scope and some 2 3/4 inch Hornady SSt's to try out..

Well, I've lumped paper pretty consistently with slugs but have yet to hunt. I would be comfortable with certain rigs out passed 100. I meant actual kill shot or first shot bullseye on paper. Just trying to be part of the convo :( sry ill go.

Probably has a similar loss rate to rifle hunting. A 20ga with a sabot out of a rifled barrel isn't that much different from a lot of the bigger slower rifles - would you say 200yds is too far for a scoped 45-70 for instance? With a load the gun likes 3-4" groups at 200yds is totally doable. Is that not sufficient?

A scoped shotgun with a rifled barrel and sabots it likes isn't fairly compared to foster slugs through a smooth bore, especially if the rifled gun has a scope and the other doesn't. I live in a jurisdiction where rifles are always allowed so I have no reason to use a slug gun, but if I had to I see no reason why 200yds wouldn't be entirely doable with the right gun/load combo.
 
How good are you in estimating the range between 100 and 300 meters?

Here is just an example of the bullet drop for those sabots ....

There is a reason why some people stick to 120 to 150 meters max for shotgun hunting ....
 
The deer I shot at 190 yards with the Savage 220 20 gauge died just as quickly as the ones I shot at less than 20 yards.

These things shoot cloverleaf patterns at 100 yards and are much, much better than grandpas smoothbore throwing foster slugs. Go for a 150 yard zero and you're good to go out to 200 yards.
