Your longest shot on game with a 300 Win Mag?

Since the thread has evolved into longest shot on game ever; 946 with a Defensive Edge built .338 Edge Canyon Rifle. 30 inch fluted Hart barrel, BAT action, Wyatt box, jewel trigger, 8.5-25 Mark 4 and a 300 grain SMK. Mulie doe never knew what hit it.

Since our supply of CWD tags and over populated zones dried up, the bottom has sort of fallen out of the long range hunting game. And make no mistake it is a game.

It wasn't that great. I had a chance when it was cold so I went on a 150-160 round weekend marathon load work-up using bags of ice to cool the barrel between groups and even between shots. Concluded that life is too short to fight with a junk barrel, so I called up Ted and did the one step program.

Based on your critique I am thinking that I should do the same! I have read many reviews, some good, some bad and some horrible! Who installed the barrel on the rifle and how does it shoot now and how much did the modification effect the overall weight? Thanks man!

Shoot it first, no use making trouble before there is trouble. Besides if its a new rifle it has an accuracy guarantee. It's important to stay grounded in reality. You don't buy 6 pound rifles to shoot long strings at 1000 yards, you get them to handle 1 or 2 shots in a hunting situation and be portable.

True that, I will shoot it first. If I can not get the grouping I want, I will then take the next step. This rifle is not intended to be a range rifle, strictly a hunting rifle and 95% the time I take one shot to get the job done. If I get 1 MOA @ 100 yards using the Nosler ABLR's I will be satisfied with it, if not I wont be happy and go from there. Thanks

Don't worry about 1 inch at 100 yards, rather concern yourself with 6 inches at 600 yards. Even that fades in importance compared to putting the group in the center of the target which is a more important and somewhat harder task. Oops, did I say group? My bad; a hunter only gets one try with a cold gun. Then there's wind, the wildcard that will always have a some guesswork in it.

That's not to say it can't be done, but the only reliable shortcut is selling your soul. Even that is debateable.;)

Great tip, thanks. After I break in the barrel I will focus on 600 yards.

I will use the following for my initial testing:

Nosler Trophy Grade ABLR 190 Gr.
Nosler Custom Hand Loaded 200 Gr.
Barnes VOR-TX - TTSX BT 180 Gr.
Hornady Superformance SST 180 Gr.

After my initial testing I will get the turret etched first before I go out for my 600 yard testing.)

Keep in mind that when you get your dope, ideally, you should be shooting in the same conditions you will be hunting in - temperature, pressure, altitude, etc. This probably won't matter so much out to 300 but it will matter once you start reaching further.

Correct! I don't like shooting further than that because the group opens wider. Three inches is enough to miss under the deer's body or back enough to miss the diaphragm and lungs.

I shot my first moose at 374 yards with my .300 winmag.

Moose was slightly quarting away...placed cross hairs top of back and touched off. By the time I got the scope back up for second shot all I could see was 4 legs kicking in the air. Double lunged and exited in front of front shoulder.

Last day of the hunt during a rain storm when everyone else was back at camp...I spooked 3 moose walkin into the meadow...the cow finally stopped at 374 yards

[/IMG] longest shot this year ,not with a 300 thou,insted it was a 7mm STW ,162 gr A-Max,79 gr retumbo,Sightron Siii 6x24x50 2moa,907 yards

Longest shots with a 300- 75 yds on a whitetail, 60 yds on a moose. The moose had to be tracked into dirty black burn! Chain saw a recovery trail to get it out. Very bad bullet performance! Recovered a empty cup no lead. ( Sieara 200 bt ) too much volicity for the range & construction. The only 2 animals I shot with that rifle.

Longest with a 300WM with PP 180 grains. In NWT, -30 C, 80 feet of elevation, 600 yards(observed); Savage 111. Bushnell Banner 3-9 x 40mm. sighted in for 200 yards. Holdover - estimated 4 feet over the back. Interestingly enough the exist hole was close to a tangerine size. I realized that the 300 WM is a very capable round. I don't use that much gun anymore for moose when a 300WSM can do it too.

Never used it personally, but I have seen my brother shoot a nice bull moose at a measured 250 yards ,one shot behind the ear ...I was pretty impressed - I was watching with binos from about 400 yards away, seen the Moose rear up and fall backwards then heard the shot , ruger #1

In late November 2004, I shot a 8x7 (split brow on one side / split G2 on the other) whitetail (my avatar pic) with 180gr Accubond CT's Winchester Supreme ammo from my Sako m75ss 300WM. Scope is a Leupold Vari-X III 3.5-10x40-Duplex reticle. Had the rifle new since 1997 and spent 'lots' of time at the range and knew the ballistics and reticle and good range estimation. Shot was a 1 shot-double lug pass thru penetration- I dropped to 1 knee for a steady rest. Small entrance, large exit wound. The buck dropped in his tracks. Shot was 554 metres. I let him finish his business with a doe, turn to go look at another doe, went broadside. I laser ranged the shot after when my inlaws come to pick me up. I ranged from the buck back to the truck that the inlaws parked from where I had shot.

I started to reload AB's in 2005 with the 180gr AB's in my 300WM.

Learn your rifle and caliber ballistics, put in time at the range to KNOW your rifle, and experience will help you. I do prefer to call in or stalk closer but sometimes it doesn't happen and you have to make a choice.

Taken some bull moose at 350-400 metres with one shot as well.

Just bought a 300 Win Mag for Moose, Elk and Deer Hunting and was wondering what it's potential for longer shots is.

What was your longest shot on game and what ammo did you use?

Thanks!

It has the potential, do you? That is the question.
My longest shot on a moose was 375 yards with a 30.06. 14° uphill slope. Hand loaded ammo using Speer 180 gr. mag tips and a 4831 powder charge which I forget how much. It was not a hot load and the rifle was a Remington 700 BDL glass bedded and trigger set to 2.75 lbs. The rifle was sighted in at 225 meters. My 300 WM is quite capable of duplicating that and I think I might be too.
