Normally I would leave it alone, but there are a few ergonomic things that I just couldn't stand.
1. The butt stock. Replaced with a MagPul MOE fixed carbine stock (slight modification to the buffer tube);
2. Trigger, OEM one was horrible! No matter how much I polished it, I couldn't do anything with it. Replaced it with another stock AR-15 trigger. Huge difference;
3. Ambi-safety selector. Hate it! As I am right handed, the Ambi-safety on the right side of the rifle would rub and dig in against the inside of my hand when grasping the pistol grip. Drove me nuts! So it was replaced with a normal one;
4. Optics/sights. None equipped so it needs something... going with a SWFA fixed 10 X; and
5. Charging handle, I find the OEM one a little too small/narrow. Going with a Bravo Company Mfg Gunfighter Charging Handle (medium).

I think I will run this in this configuration.

I wish they would sell a stripped version of these. That way I wouldn't have to waste money replacing the crappy parts... LoL
 
Many people, if given the option, would have rather just bought all the proprietary parts that make the gun a "102" from BCL and outfitted the gun themselves. I know I would have much rather purchased my own LPK, stock, barrel, handguard, and muzzle device to make the gun exactly what I want. But BCL did not give me that option. They are only selling full guns.

So yeah, i'm going to strip out the gritty mil-spec trigger, the bargain bin buttstock, and the 2lb handguard and replace with parts that suite my application. To me, they were all just placeholders anyways.
 
Down the road, when the initial feeding frenzy has subsided, perhaps it might be possible that a run of stripped down rifles could be offered.
Brownells offers basic ARs ready to have custom features installed.
 
Anyone know if the pic rail on the BCL forend is hollow?

I cant recall where I read this but I heard some rails were.

I plan on machining / milling holes directly under the pic rail to reduce weight (as well as lengthening some of the MLOK cutout segments) to give it a bit of a diet.

I can't recall which rail I saw on the web that had these holes milled but it should substantially reduce the weight.

Luckily I acquired a spare forend so if I eff up I still have the factory one
 
Anyone know of a source for the 308 version of an M4 survival butt stock?

I have searched the web and no joy.

Have them on two NEA15's and would love the ability to have one for this rifle.
 
I'll be milling my hand guard as well (when my rifle comes back from Mystic).

Not too worried about butchering it, cause I have a feeling if I mess it up to the point it needs to be replaced, stock units will be pretty easy to come by.

My NEA just cost me more than a MV... hahahahhahaha

The things we do when we get a NR AR10 fall from the heavens.... On a positive note my 2nd Brownells order shipped today and so did my CTC Supplies order for my Precision Armament - M4-72 Comp :)

Lol. And you're probably not going to be the only one to do this. Unless you're one of the guys that will leave the 102 practically as it comes there isn't much point. With the MV/MH rifles you are buying a rifle that already comes with all the bells and whistles and a top of the line barrel to boot. Pay once, and don't regret it later.

With the NEA or BCL or whatever it is now when it's all said and done, well you still have a NEA.

Not knocking the 102 or anything. Just saying. I'm still glad we have another option.
 
the MH isnt a AR10 tho ! and has way to much proprietary crap ( bells and whistles as you call it ) on it that you cant touch or it voids the warrenty.... lol.. Thanks but no thanks....

I like to tinker and be different. I Dont want the same rifle as every other Joe blow. They wont be many NEA parts on mine when im done...lol...

There's still a huge price advantage even if you go ham with upgrades. A MH with a basic setup including threaded, black coated barrel, ATRS brake, Ambi safety and an MOE Grip is $4k and it takes 6+ months to arrive... and still might give you light primer strikes and have a floppy charging handle. Lol, no thanks.

Geissele Super Charging Handle - Brownells $170

So like $2600 and I replaced the charging handle and muzzle brake just because. Once I install my rail it'll be a 8.2 lb gun. To get near that with a MH you'd have to go with the lightest rail (Fortis 12" at +$400) and a Proof CF barrel (+$1000)... Now the MH costs $5500 , more than double.

Actually the light profile stainless barrel weighs the same or less than the carbon fiber barrel, they said the lightest possible setup was light stainless barrel and fortis handguard.

Fair enough, ATRS says the heavy profile Proof CF and light Stainless are within an oz of each other. So $4500 or $5500 depending which you choose.
 
The CF barrel combines the pros of both light&heavy barrels, it's certainlly a nice addition to a rifle if you are willing to pay for it.
MH does comes with stainless match grade barrel and a billet receiver set, which are more expensive than what the 102 comes with. But the 102 is a much better deal for sure.
