What would be better. I'm thinking about buying either the Springfield XD or the Smith & Wesson MP both look really good, but I've never shot either. Also would you go 9mm or 40cal. Looking for any and all imput. Thanks

I have one of each and like them both. But what you need to do is drive to Calgary, go to The Shooting Edge and shoot them both and see which gun shoots the best for you.

As for calibre, it really depends on what you want the gun for. 9mm is definitely cheaper to shoot than .40. So unless you have a specific reason to want a .40, I'd say go with the 9mm.

I was in Calgary this morning and drove past The Shooting Edge I will hopefully end up there in the next couple of weeks to give them a whirl. Thanks for the info.

Go for the M&P - I personally much prefer them to the M&P in almost every way with the exception being the slide release on the M&P being a bit tight/tough to push down with just my thumb when the slide is locked back. Definately try both if possible but if you are buying them blind, go for the M&P. Heck, at least you can adjust the grip size on it if that might be a problem (big hands ?)

You won't regret either, the smith may retain more resale value........the xd comes with holster and magpouch.......I've shot both, but it came out well after the xd, thats what I have....but I'd buy a M&P in a second

Hello,

I saw go with a .40 it has a better stopping power then the 9mm and wont go flying out the other side once they penetrate the zombie.

but 9mm is cheaper. depends on your budget. but i go with HK USP .40s&m

best 9mm is the beretta 92

edit

thats my opinion

I've shot the M&P with factory .40S&W ammo and I thought it was a light 9mm... I'd say go with that.

.40 S&W is nice if you don't own any pistols at all as it fills the gap between 9x19 and .45acp quite nicely :)

If you want cheap cheap shooting get a .22lr next ;)

+2.
The M&P in 40S&W is one of the nicest pistols in that calibre period!
I've had XD's as well, but my tendency would be to go with the M&P, either in 9mm or 40!

Really? I find mine is one of the easier slide releases to push and the mags drop free nicely. They are however a little tough to load.

I say M&P as well. At $649 plus $20 shipping it's a good deal. I was impressed by the 9mm.

That being said, I wouldn't mind an XD as well. :D

As "stopping power" is not a factor in Kanuckistan (I've yet to have a paper target attack me), I'd say stick with the 9mm. Cheaper and nicer to shoot!
Should you ever be able to carry, the man who shoots his weapon regularly is far more dangerous than the guy with the bigger bullet who never practices.
$.02

On the M&P isn't it supposed to be a "Slide Lock" only not a release as well?
The intent was for the operator to rack the slide. At least that is what I read.
As always, I may be mistaken.

Neither.
I'd go with a Glock 17.
9mm because there is nothing wrong with it as either a paper puncher or as a defensive round.

XD = no parts or service outside of sending your firearm direct to Springfield Armory.
M&P = shiite 10/10 round mags. If you can secure proper mags for this pistol it may be a different story, but it curently sucks because of this.

The only handguns I have ever shot were a 32acp ppk and another little 25acp a long time ago. I have handled a friends Glock 17 and the Springfield XD in 45 acp. The XD felt alot more comfortable than the Glock. The MP and the XD are both have a very similar grip so this is why I did not really spend time on the Glock . I was leaning towards the 9mm only because of the price of the ammo so I wanted to see what the majority felt obviously the 9 is the way to go. Thanks for all the imput it all helps.

Also note that if you go for the XD40, you can buy an aftermarket 9mm barrel (EFK Firedragon, Barsto, etc) and run 9mm, but you can't go the other way, IIRC.

However, I'd go with what everyone else said previously: go down, try them, and buy the one you like.

These conversions have proven very prone to failure, or extensive 'tweeking' to run right. For the costs of the low-buck polymer framed pistols, the money would be better spent on buying a pistol in the caliber you wanted to shoot. As always, ymmv.
