They say the SKS are like potato chips, and I'm looking to expand my collection. I've found a small batch online that are refurbs, "amazing condition", but come in at $300. The second option is the canada ammo deal, but it's a total crap shoot on what you'll get (no choice).
Basically, do you think it's worth the $300 for a mint mint SKS or is that a little steep for today's market, or is it better to try my luck with a $200 lotto draw. I have a daily driver SKS for the shooting, so any more I get that are half decent shape will sit in the safe for a rainy day, take them out now and again to admire how pretty they are.

Thanks for the input!

Check with weimajack. I just got a couple from him in the last couple months and they are in fantastic shape. He has some on the EE at the moment. Check him out and it is cheaper than $300

300 is too steep for me, I have three SKS's never paid over 200 for any of them. In fact two of them were under $160. They are all in pretty great shape but not mint by any means. I shoot mine though, not looking for show pieces, but to each their own

Take a look at TradeEx. They got Select Grade that sounds like a non-refurbs from the description and at $249 seems like a better option. As for weimajack his current shipment is frankenpinned mags.

If you think about it, you get a lot of freeking gun for the money. $300 for mint isn't bad. $300 for any old sks in the US is cheap. They pay up to $700 for them in some places. These guns are only cheap because they are plentiful here. Highly under valued in my opinion.

Be careful! I started out with just one and now, four months later, I have six! I had to forcibly stop myself from buying another one today!
If you want one to admire, it needs to be special, like a supergrade or unissued like Weimajack's (his current frankenpins are done very nicely)
You shouldn't have to spend more than $260 plus taxes and shipping. The thing I like about Weimajack is that you get to choose what you
want from pictures and a meaningful description (rather than a generic description that describes all SKS)

I still see very decent SKS in the $200-225 range [gun shows; Canadian Tire]. I'd shop around, and always want to personally inspect any SKS I considered buying. Keep in mind that refurb rifles will usually be as good as new.

I just got a very nice 54 Tula from Westrifle. Numbers match, all same fonts/handwriting, shows very little mechanical wear, gorgeous and far better than I hoped to find. $240 incl delivery

I don't think I'd pay $300 for an sks, but I have the fortune to be able to drop in to a couple local gun stores and pick out a nice one for myself. Or I call a friend at one of the site sponsors and get them to hand pick a cherry one for me ;)

I picked up a SKS from a place in Red Deer (not a sponsor so won't use name - pm if you'd like) for $250 tax in and it's in VERY good shape. The stock matches the handguard (although the stock is a forced-match) and the pin is on the follower.

It looks as close to a non-refurb original as I'm going to get. If I'm looking for a shooter, then I'll buy online. This one is for looks (my other one is the "buddy gun").

I'd have to look over a SKS carefully before I'd plunk down $300, but if it's in original condition, that's not a bad price.

Thanks guys. I ended up buying one of weimajack's. Even though they're frankenpinned they look like they're in mint shape. Having an unrefurb for $260 was worth it to me. There's always another SKS coming soon though, they seem to multiply.

I guess one of the big attractions of the SKS, for me, is that they are such a BARGAIN right now. All the noise about getting the best deal
is noise made by us who have an abundance to choose from.
