Hey guys,

Well since your the experts around here, fill me in on your opinions.

I am looking for something i can shoot 300-500 yards regularly, accurately, and relatively cheap.

Since i only have a milsurp right now and am not a fan of 100 yards being the only fun thing to do i want either a mini 14 target or a remmington 700 both in .223.

Whats my best option? I get excited over small groups and want to do things fairly cheap (compared to most long range rifles).

Best out of the box with a decent scope between the two?

Any other suggestions in .223 i should look at?

I love my nagant but 7.62x54r is a pain in a small town where .223 i can get a wal-mart or crappy tire or bulk from a sponser.

No hunting involved, just punching holes in paper.

Thanks.

i have a mini14 target with the laminate stock and i love it. fit and finish is oustanding the wood feels good a nice satin texture the stainless is steel is also very nice. It has a 5.56x45 chamber which is good and im unsure if the rem 700 does or not.

any way mine will easily shoot moa but i am not a very good shooter and i have no range memebership so the best i could is like 1.5 moa at 120 yards paced off with a bipod. ( a good bipod at that) i love my gun and i can shoot fist size groups at 200 without a bench or anything using winchester whitebox. and i have not even touched my "harmonic dampener" I think if you want the fun of a semi-auto get it, you won't be disappointed by its accuracy. (definetly get the laminate stock model though.)

I don't think you can compare the two :) I have the rem 700P in 223 and if you want to shot at longer ranges the 700P hands down is the clear choice, and it will take any 223/556 you throw at it ;)

No Semi is ever going to come close to the accuracy of a bolt gun. The Mini-14 is NOT known for its accuracy, even the "target" model. Some are better than others, but they have a chequered reputation. I have one and it is a dog for accuracy. Fun... but a dog.

Even though I am not a remington fan out of the two I would choose the 700p. You could also look at savage and tikka. Go with a heavy barrel.

700P would probably be the choice you want based on what you wrote you are interested in: "small tight groups" and 300-500 yards.

The target Minis shoot great, but they are nowhere near as accurate as the Remington. If you were interested in coyote hunting, I would say go for the target Mini so you could get your faster follow up shot.

Get a bolt gun first, heavy barrel 700 or Savage. Easy on brass, better for reloading.
Stick to 1:8 or 1:9 twist if you can.

Yes, I have Mini 14 Target and its almost as accurate as my Tikka .
