I'm looking to drop a scope on my 223 NEF rifle but cannot drop alot of coin. The rifle will be used to hit coyotes (new to this game so I don't know the distances) and does not need to see well in low light. I'm guessing I'll need a 3-9 but am wondering of the advantages of a 50mm over a 40mm. Do I get more FOV? Thanks

fov, more a factor of power setting, obj diameter will let in more light, 7 being the magic number, ie 7 power , and 49 mm obj works. , another example, a fixed 8 x scope has an obj of 56 mm, the reason max light in 7x8 for 56 mm.

Bushnell Banner Dusk to Dawn series a 4-12, like $149,99. No real advantage in a 50mm on your rifle except you will need much higher rings. FS
 
Check out the Nikon forum next door. Got a 6-18x Buckmaster on my CZ527 223 that gives wicked optics for about half the price of a Leupold and much better glass than a Bushnell. Got several Nikons now including a Monarch 6x and a Prostaff 4x on my CZ452.
What I saved would probably buy another Leupold. Better glass I figure by a fair bit.
 
Few very good scopes on the market to choose from...if your main purpose is use for coyotes, the distance most likely will be kinda long range...the best scope and cost effective for your .223 is the Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40 mil dot 1/4 MOA with rain guard, target turret for BC for long range...90% light tran, 100% water/fog/shockproof. All that for $239.95 new at WWS.

Bushnell elite is getting good reviews. if you can find a used leupold in your price range as the warranty is simply the best in the business and there is no advantage to buying a new one over a used one. any troubles send her in for repairs or flat out exchange.7 power or higher is what you will need.
 
I've used Bushnells of all kinds. The 3200 series have been rock solid for me and I find them very clear. Personally I can't tell the difference between the 4200 and the 3200 ( old eyes I guess) other than the price tag. The lower end ones have been pure crap for me with six of them going t*ts up.

In the prairies 300M plus shots for yotes are a reality so don't buy cheap optics. I'd go with 3200 quality or better. Cheaper scopes have higher powers as well but the eye relief is horrible and the image sucks. ( Maybe it is just and old set of eyes;))
