Your "perfect" antelope gun

Never hunted speed goats but if I did my first rifle/cartridge choice would be my made in spring 1958 Husqvarna chambered in 270 Wby that my grandfather gave my dad and my dad gave to me.

I redressed it last year in a od green cerakoted McMillan stock and cerakoted the barreled action satin black, I mounted a VX2 4-12X40mm LR reticle scope my load is 140gr TSX @ appr 3200fps.

If I were to grab a second combo it would be my Rem 700 XCR 11 in 25-06 loaded with 95gr E-Tips haven't had a chance to work up a load yet though.

I don't see whats wrong with a plane-jane .270win for this very purpose. Its not a popular caliber among prohorn hunters? Its mind boggling.

probably because its a boring round like the 30-06 and the 308. Some people like the different calibers that not everyone uses. I love my 25-06 and not everyone has 1 so its that much better.

Thanks for posting that link, Boomer. Very interesting. I used to devour all those mags back then; don't know how I missed this, or forgot it.

I'm not one to jump on new whizbang cartridges every time a manufacturer moves a shoulder or makes some other "revolutionary" change...but I think I would grab a #1 in ".338R-Keith" in about a heartbeat. :) Just because!

Well, time to bring up an old thread.... I was one of 800 people out of roughly 25,000 who managed to get a antelope draw tag in saskatchewan!! Times don't currenhrtly allow me to build a 250-3000 ai however, I did get a LH 260 Remington and that'll be my "go
To" this fall. I can't wait for the fall!!!

Screams the Legendary 270 Winchester, To be honest ;)

130grains , some practise, a reticle with drop hashes , antelope be runnin scared!

Depending on far the shots will be I would shoot my 300 Win mag with 215 Bergers. If closer shots up to a max of 700 yds, 6.5X47 with 130 Berger. 500 yds and under 25-06AI with 115 Berger. Gobig I would look into the 130 Berger hunting to run in your 260. My 6.5X47 drives them at 2980 fps and they have been deadly on deer size size game.

I have a couple rifle's in my safe that I could use, 25-06 sako av or one of my 270's. I got a ruger#1 270win with a 26" barrel that would be nice. If I was going to buy a dedicated antelope rifle, a 264 win mag would be on my radar. I've never hunted antelope though. :(

Shot one in 2009 with my 6.5x55... it killed it dead.

I've never hunted antelope and it is highly unlikely that I ever will, but that would be my choice, if I had one with a scope, which I don't. I currently own a South Gate Weatherby in .257, so that would likely get the nod.

I always heard how terrible antelope meat was. The first time I tried it, just a few years ago, was when I took a buck in sagebrush country...no crops within many miles. I was prepared for the worst. My wife cooked it up carefully, got the recipe from the internet....and we both loved it! Doesn't taste like beef and don't try to make it taste like beef; it tastes....like antelope! To each his own...:)

An older fellow that hunted antelope for years told me that it was very important to get the hide off as soon and as quickly as possible. A FN friend brought us a hind quarter of antelope. We cooked it all day in the stove, then called him over for supper. It was the nicest roast meat I've ever eaten.

I'm having a 7mm-08 AI built, mostly intended for hunting Whitetail, but I've also had it in the back of my mind for antelope should I ever actually be drawn for a tag. When it's complete, I'm going to work on a 120 gr load so that I have one prepared in the event I'm ever drawn. I'm having it built with the goal of shooting and feeling like my target rifles, but in a lightweight package. It'll be based on a Rem 700 action, with a CarbonSix barrel, and Mcmillan Game Scout carbon fiber stalk. Should hopefully come in under 8 pounds with a 4.5-14 Leupold on it.

A vote for the boring old .243!!

Me too.

That's what my father ended up using after many other calibers... and I did the same. Certainly an adequate cartridge on antelope out to 400 yards...

it's good they are a smaller sized animal... not many people like the meat...
