Well, since I got mostly positive and some negative feedback on my style of hunting, I thought it might be a good opportunity for a thread that highlights what hunting truly is or what it means to the diverse groups out there. A few basic questions but feel free to add whatever you think is useful info :)


  • What's your perspective on what hunting is?
  • Why do you hunt? What does it do for you?
  • What's your style? Stalk, sniper, tree/ground, truck etc.
  • What's your equipment? Firearm, bow, commercial/custom ammo etc and setup? :stirthepot2:
  • What's your range? Ethical or not, short to long, what do you like?
  • Mentor or self trained?

Use the questions as guidelines or not at all. It's open to what you want to say. Looking forward to some great opinions, views, experience and advice ;)

Killing animals so my family and I can eat them.

Primarily for the meat. I refuse to support the industrial meat cartels by buying and eating their abused, chemical-laden crap. However, I really enjoy all aspects of hunting; being in the woods, finding game, shooting/marksmanship, gutting, butchering, packing, cooking. Everything.

All of these, but enjoy stalk and snipe the most.

.270, 12GA, and .22WMR. Factory ammo. Total investment under $1000.

Depends on species, but anywhere from 5m to about 300m.

Decide what your own reasons are, and your own methods. As long as you stay within the law, it's nobody's business what you choose.

flame war in 3, 2, 1 ... Hunting means a lot of different things to a lot of different people . I grew up hunting and fishing it is as enjoyable as a hike in the woods and you bring home meat so it can go from a good day to a great day on occasion.I have hunted with bows, rifles, black powder and spears down to rocks and sticks for grouse and squirrel. style would have to be redneck hillbilly mountainman, my camo doesn't match actually it is jeans and a waterproof coat with a camo shirt to keep my son happy , my gear doesn't match. I don't care about the best of the best and see no need for hunting to cost any more than a tank of gas and a bullet for one of the guns in the safe. I dress my own meat , I butcher it too. I can field dress in complete darkness and do a pretty decent job. most of your questions are techie hunter based ... :) I see game, if I like it I shoot it if not it walks another day .
 
True hunting is following the laws of the land and ensuring a quick/humane kill....it's all personal ethics after that and they should remain personal.
 
Wow! With that many questions your looking for too much to be answered on a forum like this. Books have been written trying to answer those questions.

But I'll have a stab at some of it.

As man was evolving those who were good hunters (successful hunters) survived to pass on the genes and knowledge about hunting. They were respected members of the tribe and got the best beer.

There was no such thing as "ethics" and "fair chase" then. Getting the meat was critical. (sometimes I think that "poachers" of today may be among the best hunters, they just don't follow our modern rules)

At some point we started calling it "SPORT HUNTING" and made up all kinds of rules and fair chase. It used to be the hunter who could figure the easiest way to get game was a hero. Now we look for and respect doing things the hard way.

I hunt because I think I have the hunter's blood in my veins. I enjoy being in the outdoors and trying to figure out how I can get close to animals and birds and fish. I like to get them and I like to eat them.

I have used a bow, a muzzle loader a shotgun and a modern center-fire rifle. I don't care for taking "long shots" when I can get closer and I'd rather try again tomorrow that to take a chance on a long shot today.

I learned most about hunting from reading,watching video and doing it myself. I mostly hunt alone but do have some hunting friends I sometimes go out with. I hunt with my wife and daughter and son and those are now my favourite hunts.

I have written some articles on hunting for outdoor magazines and I now write a weekly column in a local paper where I talk about hunting and fishing a lot.
 
Your confused. In you other thread the issue is not style of hunting. The issue is what type of guy you are and your equipment.

Let me help you understand it. You must imagine a bunch of tactical, F class type dudes are going to shoot some gongs at 500 yards for fun, while they are reading their Kestral wind meters and plugging numbers in to Isnipe a guy shows up with a beat up wood stocked Winchester M70 hunting rifle, a 4x scope, no bipod, and one box of Remington Corelock ammo. A bunch of dudes are going to roll their eyes, but everyone will be friendly and let the guy shoot with them.

Your the guy.
 
When I hunt with my son half the day is spent walking and the other half driving . He is 14 so we have a circuit of about 35-40 Km that he drives for practice . We don't see many deer cruising at 40 Km/h but it makes for a good time after him pushing brush for 5 hours at first light and fills the time till they start moving again in the evening.
I know how you feel about atv's in the bush lol we walk the woods and hear guys cruising the entire slash in about 10 minutes above us , the only real benefit is they usually spook stuff our way . OT for gear I have a sako with a 4x12 Leupold and my son hunts a Tikka t3 with a 3x9 redfield .
 
If it's brown it goes down. (If I have a tag for it). None of this picky trophy hunting crap. I want me some pepperettes and sausage.
 
Hunting is finding something and killing it. The rest is debatable.

... I also allow hunting to extend to other activities such as "treasure hunting", without the killing part. Sometimes I have to hunt down my dog for example.

Well, I've been hunting for 3 years and haven't yet killed something, so even the finding and killing part is debatable :). I try and look at hunting as either a nature walk with the dog if we're 'hunting' small game, or if I'm hunting big game then it's more of a nap in the bush. In fact, if I didn't get a nap in, then I figure I'm not really hunting.

This is exactly it.

As the old saying goes, "There's more than one way to skin a cat". Whatever way you decide to hunt so long as you put forth a some effort to make a good shot, who really cares what you do before and after so long as its not illegal or interferes with someone elses hunt.
 
Depending on where I go, determines the type of hunting I do. I prefer to walk because I see and shoot so much more, but I will use a quad to get further into remote locations. Generally I don't start the quad unless i have an animal to drag out. I like the idea of hunting in areas with ATV restrictions.

Shrug. I shoot a deer, I don't shoot a deer, meh.

I spent the weekend camping with some friends and deer hunting. Had a coyote come within about 15 feet of me. Coulda put an arrow through him but figured, what am i going to do with a dead coyote? Had a blast camping. Had a blast seeing the coyote. Got a nap in. Didn't kill anything. Hunting was great.

I'd like to someday, but I don't have to kill something every time I go out to have a good day hunting. The process for me is more important than the harvest.
