Personally I carry one of each as they both serve very different purposes. If forced to carry just one it would be a clip point as it allows you to do a lot of the finer skinning associated with caping and also for splitting joints.

Don`t know the diff.

I use a Cutco or a BoxCutter.

I don`t care what it looks like, as long as it`s sharp.

I like the drop point of my Russel, it allows me to run my finger the length of the blade back so I can slip open the belly of a venison without knicking the yucks :)

Drop point, blade quite short, with a handle that allows a full grip.
Designed my own, then had a builder make it for me.
Wish I had made 3 instead of one.
That builder is gone now.
Eagleye.

I'm with the drop point fella's. I like the surgical precision that you can work the tip when gutting large game and as others had mentioned you don't knick anything you aren't suppose to. It also is a great bushcraft blade design.

I've never seen the boxcutter in action either, nor have I tried it. I would think it would be rather "clumsy".

I had a deer hit out at by the mother in law's farm, and just for kicks used a scalpel. Best tool I've ever used for skinning and gutting! You can just replace the blade halfway through too.

something that I can whack with a hatchet to split bone :D

Interesting enough I have a Lakota that says right in the instrctions that the knife was made to do exactely that! It is an excellent knife but because of the blade design won't go up thru the brisket of a deer like the little Russel will.
