what cartridge???

Im contemplating about my next bolt gun.... something that would see alot of time at the range and maybe the occasional trek in the bush (aka hunting). I would like a cartridge that has an ethical amount of killing power for (upto and including) whitetail deer hunting and equally important I would like a round that generally perfoms well for punching paper. something with reasonable low recoil, as I would like to mount a ginormous scope which will probably have a shorter eye relief.

what are your suggestions ???

...and no, i do not reload as of yet:(

"...ginormous scope...shorter eye relief..." Forget that if you plan on using any calibre suitable for hunting deer. The added weight alone will wear you out fast when hunting. Even if you're in a blind. Plus a 'short' eye relief scope will give you 'weatherby eyebrow' sooner or later. A regular eye relief scope with a max magnification of 8X is plenty.

My 2 Cents...........

.260, 6.5x55mm, .270, 7mm-08, .280, 7x57mm, .308, .30-06....

forget the "ginormous" scope - get a 2.5-8, 3-9, 3-10 or 4-12. Keep the objective lense at 40mm... ;)

Either the 7-08 or 243 would be a good choice. Have you considered the 257 roberts though?

thanks for the input guys:)

I appreciate all the suggestions for a smaller scope, but it's not quite what i had in mind. I already have a couple hunting rigs set up with an appropriate hunting scope.

Win 94 .30-30 w/ 1.5-4.5x32
Stevens 200 7mmRem w/ 3-9x40
T3 30-06 w/3-10x40

(all 3200's)

Now... seeing how this rifle would primarily be (but not restricted to) use at the range I'm opting for glass with a little more reach. I love my Mueller 8.5-25×50AO and would like something similar (in 3200,4200, or vxII) for my next rifle.

now back to the cartridge....
.308 would have been my first choice but seeing I already have a couple rifles with similar perfomances I'm thinking I might go smaller. .223 would have been my next choice, but I wouldn't benefit from it's lack of killing capabilities (deer size game) that the round is limited to..... I guess anything in between is what I was looking for.

.243! Can do anything the .223 can, but with WAY more range and the power to take down larger game. Ammo isn't too badly priced either if you'll be doing a lot of target shooting.
