i have one in 9mm and it is by far the most favorite pistol that i own. i own some Sigs, a beretta, and an old browning nomad as well as the Steyr and it is the most comfortable and easy pointing of them all. don't get me wrong i love all my guns equally but the steyr is my top pick. Some people think the sights are weird, but they are EASY to get used to and now i don't think twice about where its pointing.
I was all hot and excited about the Steyr MA1 for it's slim grips, decent grip angle and low bore axis.
Handling it it was neat and as for the sights, you love them or you hate them.
Someone mentioned that it was uncomfortable for him to shoot so when I finally tried it at the range, I did notice how the grip can be an issue.
There is a hump/bump on the backstrap of the grip. Presumably, this hump is intended to aid the shooter to attain a proper high grip and get the web in place.
This hump may or may not be a comfort issue for shooters. Really depends on your individual palms.
I own an M9A1. Absolutely wonderful. Best "plastic" pistol I've ever shot. Crisp trigger, comfortable grip, great pointability, low felt recoil. Can't speak for accuracy much since I'm a terrible shooter, though.
I had M-A1 in 9mm; sold it to get the M&P. at the end I wasn't a big fan of the grip; was a little narrow for my liking and the angle was too much. Another thing I didn't like was how the gun forces the trigger finger down (if you look at the photo above you can see what I mean).
But overall it's a decent quality gun, that's easy to take apart. It doesn't have a lot of muzzle flip, but the recoils still has to go somewhere in this case webbing of the hand gets it all. which gets kinda uncomfortable after a several mags.
